305 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RIEHL, Gerald Albert Gerald was born on December 18, 1920, in Waterloo County, to Albert Riehl and Clara (Cook) along with three siblings, Ilene, William and Jack. Prior to World War II, Gerald was employed operating a press. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Stratford on July 1, 1942 and was attached to the Royal Canadian Artillery. After extensive training, he was sent overseas and fought in NorthAfrica, Sicily, and Italy where he was seriously injured. When he had recuperated enough to be discharged from the hospital, the war was over. Private Gerald Riehl was discharged in July 1945. He married Alice (Boshart), and they raised two children, Brian and Sheila. He had a passion for fishing and reading. Gerald was employed in the office of Flood’s Plumbing and Heating in New Hamburg. Gerald joined with a group of Veterans from New Hamburg, applied for a Legion Charter, and were successful. Gerald was a Charter Member and Past President (1971) who accumulated 44 years of continuous service. Gerald passed away on March 2, 1996 and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg. ROBERTS, Edward Charles Edward was born in Victoria, British Columbia on December 1, 1951. He enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) in February 1970 and served at CFB Esquimalt, Borden and Halifax, CFS Gypsumville, 1PPCLI (Calgary), HMCS Malahat, Columbia, St. Croix, Yukon, Saskatchewan, Annapolis, Preserver, Ville de Quebec, Chignecto, Miramichi and Fundy. He served in Cyprus, Haiti and Afghanistan (Op Apollo) and was discharged on November 30, 2016. Edward is a thirteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Penetanguishene Branch 68 and has been residing in Penetanguishene since May 3, 2010. RIEWE, Hatmut D.B. Hatmut was born inWest Berlin, Germany onApril 19, 1954. He joined the regular forces in March 1978 in the logistics branch as a cook. He was posted to CFB Calgary, Service Battalion, CFB Montreal, St. Hubert, CFB Petawawa, HQ & Sigs, CFB Borden, three times to the school at CFSAL, and Base CFE Lahr. He did one tour to Golan Heights. Hatmut was discharged in December 2005. He is a proud 26-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion George Duff Memorial Branch 516 in New Lowell. He has been residing in Glencairn since November 2000.
