301 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND REID, Brian A. Brian was born in Fort Erie, Ontario on November 20, 1939. He joined the Canadian Army (Regular Force) in 1957 as a gunner and was commissioned as an officer in 1961. He served in regimental, staff, and liaison appointments in Canada, Europe, and the United States during his long career. His last appointment, before his retirement as Lieutenant-Colonel in 1994, was with the Joint Plans and Operations Staff at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. Reid has written a number of works on Canadian military history. His book “No Holding Back: Operation Totalize, Normandy, August 1994” was met with critical praise. John Marteinson, former editor of Canadian Military Journal and teacher at the Royal Military College of Canada wrote: “This book should be in the library of every student of Canadian military history.” Brian passed away on November 14, 2023. REID, Robert Bruce Robert was born on September 13, 1918, in North Norwich, to Grace Helen Cohoe and Milton Douglas Reid. Robert was living at home, farming, when he enlisted on September 10, 1940 with the Royal CanadianAir Force (Regular Force). Robert served as a flight instructor with 12th Elementary Flying Training School in Goderich. Robert was flying a Tiger Moth #8909 and collided midair with a Yale #3391 (from Service Flying Training School Aylmer), just north of Rostock. R B Reid, pilot instructor and DYork, pupil pilot were in the tiger moth when the two planes hit head on at approximately 2000 ft on a cross-country flight. Both planes spun into the ground, the tiger moth burst into flames. The pilots failed to see each other; visibility was a contributing factor which was limited greatly by haze especially looking towards the sun. Robert died by an unavoidable accident while on duty on August 26, 1942. Robert is buried Plot 25 R J Grave 61 in Victoria Cemetery Drayton. REID, Donald Bedell “Don” Don was born on October 22, 1914, to Grace Helen Cohoe and Milton Douglas Reid of Drayton. He trained at University of Toronto as a radar technician in the Air Force (Regular Force). Once graduated, Don received further training in Clinton, then serving as night fighter squadron in England until posted to India fall 1943. Don was one of seven Canadian Radar Tech on Marnix von Sint Aldegande in a convoy through the Mediterranean that was attacked on November 6. Men under “attack alarm” that is below decks with watertight doors closed, when the ship was hit by two radio-controlled torpedoes. When the order came to abandon ship, they slid down a rope to lifeboats and were taken to a destroyer. They watched as the crippled ship was towed, but later went down with the captain and his belongings. Don served on radar stations in northern Bengal and Assam. Don returned home in 1945 and took over the family farm. Don married Muriel Dorothy Haviland in Stratford 1949. He was one of the charter members of The Royal Canadian Legion Drayton Branch 416 in April 1946. Don passed away on November 16, 1999.
