297 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PRIMEAU, Wayne John Wayne was born in Chichester, Sussex, United Kingdom on June 25, 1943. He enlisted in the Army (Reserves) in 1961 and first joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps then transferred to the Governor General’s Foot Guards where he was promoted to the rank of Senior Sergeant Major. He then transferred to the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa as commanding officer from 1995 to 1997. With External Affairs, he served in Southern Africa, Russia, and the Middle East. He was discharged in 1999. Wayne currently resides in Kanata and is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kanata Branch 638. PYNE, Douglas Walter Douglas was born in East Ham, London, England on July 29, 1924. He joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman November 26, 1942 and was stationed at HMS Collingwood. His training and deployment took him to HMS Victory and HMS Asbury until he served on the newly commissioned Ruler Class Escort Aircraft Carrier HMS Premier, launched in San Francisco in January 1944. The carrier spent time at HMCS Esquimalt before travelling via the Panama Canal to Norfolk Virginia. Convoy CU- 21 departed on April 11, 1944 for Liverpool and then returned to Norfolk on May 12. On May 31, the carrier departed once again for Liverpool and then underwent repairs. Douglas was transferred to HMS Victory on June 20 for additional training. On December 21, 1944, Douglas was sent to HMS Glendower for additional training then returned to HMS Victory before traveling to HMS Braganza Bombay, India as a Leading Seaman on May 6, 1945. He remained there until May 20, 1946 upon which he was posted back to HMS Victory until he was discharged on October 4, 1946. Douglas got married and later raised three sons. He was a 47-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 239. He worked as a CharteredAccountant and passed away on February 19, 2005. PURDON, Cecil James Cecil was born on September 19, 1916, in McDonalds Corners, Ontario, toWilliam Henry Purdon and Elizabeth Minnie (Gilchrist) Purdon. The youngest of eight children. He enrolled in non-permanent active militia of Canada on January 9, 1941 during World War II. His basic training was at Camp Borden, Ontario. He sailed from Halifax on March 25, 1943 on the Queen Elizabeth. They initially sailed to Scotland then travelled to England. He served in Italy, Sicily, North Africa, France and Holland before returning to Canada on the Queen Mary. He was discharged from the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps on February 16, 1946. He married Hannah Sargeant on July 30, 1947. They had two children at the farm in Balderson, then in 1958 inherited a house in McDonalds Corners. Cecil worked various jobs until he started work for the CN/CP telecommunications until he retired at the age of 65. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion Perth Branch and was very proud to be a Veteran, albeit not discussing his time overseas. After having surgery for lung cancer, he entered Lanark Lodge and passed away on March 11, 1997. He was entered to rest at the Highland Line Cemetery in McDonalds Corners.
