293 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PHILPOTT, Donald “Don” Don was born in North Bay, Ontario on June 12, 1923. Two months later, the family moved to Windsor, Ontario. On February 17,1942, Don enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) in Windsor. His basic training was in Aylmer, Ontario and after that, he went to Yorkshire, England where he joined the RAF Bomber Command. He worked as an Operator Mechanic Mobile Equipment Group 2. He re-enlisted on January 30, 1948 and served until December 15, 1949. After his release, Don came back toWindsor and operated his own Supertest service station. Don got married and raised two children. After leaving the business, he went to Chrysler for the next 23 years. After retirement, Don did odd jobs at the Air Force Club. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 94 and Branch 364 for a total of over fifty years. Don passed away on September 9, 2013. PLATJOUW, James Emil James was born in Detroit, Michigan, USA on October 13, 1917. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in 1943. Private James Platjouw was shipped to England, then to France, Germany, and to Antwerp, Belgium where he was made a corporal at the front lines. At the front lines at Hockwell Forest in Germany, he was blown up in combat then taken to the field hospital. The doctor hand drilled into his skull to relieve the pressure on his brain. He was flown back to Reding Hospital in England to continue removing shrapnel from his head on February 15, 1945. He was released from hospital at the end of the war. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 18. James passed away on October 27, 1999. PITKIN, Charles Edward Charles was born on November 27, 1981, to parents Brian C. Pitkin and Joanne M. Cadamuro in Toronto, Ontario. He attended Lawrence Park Collegiate in 1999, then continued to Sir Sanford Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario. Charles was also a member of the Army Cadets and enjoyed rugby. He married Andrea Elizabeth Marechaux on July 4, 2014. In 2002, at age 21, Charles voluntarily enlisted in Toronto, Ontario into the Royal Regiment of Canada (Reserve) rising to the rank of Major, then in 2013, he joined the PPCLI (Regular Force) where he served as a Captain. Charles came from a lengthy list of military family members from both the Great War and WWII. Charles’ deployments included Afghanistan (2008) and South Sudan (2012). He was serving with the PPCLI at Defense HQ in Ottawa at the time of his death. Captain Charles Pitkin’s medals include: the General Campaign Star SouthWest Asia, General Service Medal SouthWest Asia, and the United Nations Medal for service in South Sudan, in addition to the Canadian Forces Decoration. Charles E. Pitkin died on May 30, 2022, at age 40. He was cremated and returned to Manitoulin Island to the place he treasured.
