291 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PETTIGREW, Marie Thérèse Sonia Sonia was born in L’Isle-Verte, Rivière-du-Loup, Québec, on March 28, 1962. She joined the CanadianArmed Forces (Regular Force) in January 1984 as anAir Force Finance Clerk. She worked in Orderly Rooms at several bases in Canada. Her operational career included postings with 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron in Edmonton, Alberta, and with 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron at 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario. She served as an instructor at the Canadian Forces School of Administration and Logistics (CFSAL) and at the Air Command Academy at Canadian Forces Base Borden, Ontario. Sonia also deployed on UN and NATO tours including Kosovo, Camp Mirage in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and at Canadian Forces Station Alert in the Canadian Arctic. Late in her career, she transferred to Air Reserves and continued to work in her trade as CFSAL, CFB Borden. She retired from the Forces after 32 years of service, to continue to work as a civilian contractor at the same military school. Sonia retired from the Forces in 2016 and now lives near Victoria Harbour, Ontario. She joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 523 in Victoria Harbour in December 2023. PHILLIPS, Harvey Harold Harvey was born in Toronto on October 10, 1920, the son of Harold Hackett and Edna Belle Phillips. Prior to World War II, Harvey worked as a messenger for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He was also a scoutmaster with the 95th Toronto Troop, and had joined the militia with the Irish Regiment of Canada in 1938. Following Canada’s declaration of war, Harvey enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Toronto with the Royal Regiment of Canada, Canadian Active Service Force on September 7, 1939. He was single. Then, on June 10, 1940, Private Harvey Phillips left Canada for Reykjavik, Iceland with his unit for a four-month stay as garrison duty before landing in the United Kingdom on November 3, 1940. He had initially joined the unit as a bugler, but was later transferred to Orderly Room work. On August 18, 1942, he crossed to France as part of Operation Jubilee, the ill-fated Dieppe Raid. Harvey was reported missing the next day, and later confirmed killed in action against the enemy on August 19, 1942. He is buried in France at the Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery. PFAFF, Orville Charles Orville was born on April 17, 1911, in New Hamburg, Ontario, to Edward and Lillie (Hueglin) Pfaff along with Reginald Herbert, Clare Frederick, and Audrey. Prior to World War II, Orville worked with his father and brother in the family barber shop. Orville married Gladys Marie (Weber) and they raised three boys; Bryan, Grant, and Tom. He enlisted in the military (Regular Force) in December 1943 and it was not long before he became the barber at Camp Ipperwash until he was discharged in 1945. Upon his return to his family, he joined his father and brother in the barber shop. Orville, along with a few boys from New Hamburg obtained a Charter to have a Royal Canadian Legion in New Hamburg. He missed very few meetings in the ensuing years, always a member of the executive, always volunteering on committees. His wife, Gladys (2008), was a Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary and his son Grant (2010) was a 37-year associate member of the Legion. He was a Charter Member, a Life Member, and a 36-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion. Orville passed away on April 16, 1988 and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg, Ontario.
