289 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PAUL, Ormond Melville Frederick Ormond was born in Poland, Ontario on November 24, 1917. He enrolled in the Army in Kingston on April 15, 1941. In 1941, he sailed to England and after training in Aldershot, he sailed though the Mediterranean and landed in Sicily. He was trained as an armourer. From 1941 through 1945, he served with the Perth Regiment and fought in Sicily, Italy, Germany, Belgium, France and Holland. During the war, he was wounded and hospitalized in the field four times. When the war was declared over on May 8, 1945, he was in Nijmegen, Holland. He sailed home in December 1945, and celebrated Christmas on board the Queen Elizabeth. He was discharged on January 30, 1946. After the war, he completed an electrical apprenticeship in Prescott, ON. He resided for the remainder of his life in Perth, ON and passed away on December 16, 2003, at the age of 86. For his service, he received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence of Britain Medal, Victory Medal, 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star and the France and Germany Star. Ormond was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Perth Branch 224. PEARSON, Robert Robert was born in Ethel, Huron County, on May 18, 1879. He was married and enlisted in Calgary, Alberta on November 4, 1915. He was the General Secretary of the YMCA in Calgary at the time. Robert sailed to England on the SS Olympic on May 31, 1916. He was attached to the 89th Battalion, 103rd Regiment, and 49th Battalion and served in France and Belgium. In September 1916, he suffered a slight gunshot wound to the head and leg. He returned to action and two days later, he was shot in the chest. He was hospitalized for two months and was then discharged. By January 1917, he was assigned to the YMCA as the Director of Personnel Services CEF and Chaplain Services. In June 1917, he was taken on strength with the 31st Bn. In January 1918, he returned to Canada. He was discharged on November 25, 1919. He returned to Calgary where he was an avid sportsman. He organized and was President of the Western Canada amateur baseball, hockey, and football leagues. He retired to Vancouver in 1945. Robert passed away on July 3, 1956 and is buried in Forrest Lawn Cemetery. PEARSON, John Francis “Jack” Jack was born on May 26, 1926, in East Zorra Township, Oxford County, to Frank and Wilhelmina (Kaufman) Pearson. Jack enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in London, Ontario on November 24, 1944 and was accepted to serve with the 2nd Oxford Rifles. He served in Canada and was discharged on July 31, 1946. In 1950, Jack married Helen (Wettlaufer) and they raised five sons, Lyle, Tom, Bob, Rick, and Tim. Jack was a plumber by trade. He was first employed by Rozell Appliance Ltd in New Hamburg and finished his career in the maintenance department at Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital. He is listed as a Charter Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532 in New Hamburg and served for 45 continuous years and earned a Life Membership. Jack held the positions of President, Past President, and assisted with all the Executive. He was a Life Member of the New Hamburg Hockey Association, Past President of Waterloo Wellington Hockey Association and Past Chairman of District #26 Ontario Senior Games. He served on the Wilmot Township Council for two terms. Jack passed away on November 11, 1997 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg. His name is commemorated on the Legion’s Veterans Plaque.
