287 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PASCOE, William James “Bill” Bill was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on March 25, 1921. His early years were spent in Atikokan working in the bush with horses. He joined the army on May 26, 1942 and served overseas with the 8th L.A.A. 70th Battery Royal Canadian Artillery as a gunner. In late 1942, he was ambulated back to Canada on the Queen Elizabeth after a serious injury, spending many months recovering at Winnipeg’s Deer Lodge Veterans hospital. While overseas, he was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal as well as the 1939-1945 Star. He married Alvera Zakrewski in 1944 and they moved to Marathon in 1947. Bill and Alvera had one child and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bill worked for Marathon Corp/American Can for 32 years. He was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 183 in Marathon for over fifty years serving as president and was a life member. In the late 90s, Bill and his family moved back to Thunder Bay where he enjoyed retirement. Bill passed away on November 15, 2009. PATTERSON, Bernard “Pat” Pat was born in Montreal, Quebec on November 7, 1947. He joined the Navy in February 1960 just in time for the Cuban Missile Crisis and served on the High Seas on HMCS Athabaskan, Terra Nova, Anticosti, and Atlantic Dock Yard and Fleet Driving Unit. He got out in 1967 and rejoined in 1971. He served on the east and west coasts. Pat went to the South China Sea when peacekeepers were deployed to end the Vietnam War. Pat was discharged in September 1998. He received the Canadian Forces Decoration and bar and the Peacekeeping and NATO medals. Pat resides in Kanata where he is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 638. PASSMORE, Harry Kelvin Harry was born on December 10, 1907, in Teeswater, Ontario. He moved with his family to Elora, Ontario in the late 1920s. He spent the depression years working at whatever he could find. He worked in a limestone quarry, delivered bread, and assisted with the harvest in the west. Harry volunteered for the Army (Regular Force) in August 1942, at the age of 34. He was assigned to the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals (SIGMN). In March 1943, he was deployed overseas to the United Kingdom and then to France in June 1944. He drove heavy utility trucks transporting supplies and troops. As well as France he served in Belgium. He returned to the United Kingdom in November 1945. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence Medal, War Medal 19391945, and France and Germany Star. He was released from the army on February 13, 1946 and returned to Elora where he raised a family of three. He worked in the furniture industry in Elora until his retirement in 1975. He was a seventeenyear member of The Royal Canadian Legion Elora Branch 229. Harry passed away on November 10, 1992.
