265 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MORTON, Edward Grant Edward was born in Toronto, Ontario on May 28, 1922. He enlisted in the Army on August 25, 1942 and served with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged on March 6, 1946 and received the France and Germany Star and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp. After the army, Edward married Marguerite Bird on November 16, 1946. They had five children, nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He retired from CNR as a yard foreman and resided in the Greater Toronto Area. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. Edward passed away on January 18, 1999. MOWAT (MACPHERSON), Margaret Margaret was born in Elgin, Scotland on February 5, 1926. She was drafted into the WRENS in 1943. Due to her having attended a business college and with bookkeeping experience, she was sent to HMS Pembroke III, a shore base near London, England, to be trained as a clerk and to steward supplies. After training, she spent some time stationed at HMS Cochrane II in Scotland, and later to HMS Merlin, a Fleet Air Arm base. She was discharged in March 1945. Margaret got married in January 1946. She immigrated to St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1947 when their first born (Alasdair) was six months old. She received Canadian Citizen in April 1949. They had four sons together and moved to Toronto in 1956. Margaret was a stay-at-home mom in the beginning then worked for Eaton’s as her boys got older. Her volunteer work includes Scout Ladies Auxiliary, President Greater Toronto LA Scouting, and Honourary President Ontario LA Scouting. She moved to Lindsay, ON in November 1990 and in January 1991, transferred her Royal Canadian Legion Membership from Toronto to Lindsay. Her husband passed away in June 1991. Margaret was voted in on the Executive Lindsay Branch June 1991 and was on Branch Executive for 23 years, also served as Branch President. Margaret lead an active life, enjoyed golf, tennis and darts. MORTON (BIRD), Marguerite Louise Marguerite was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 15, 1925. She enlisted in the Navy on October 4, 1943 and served with the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service during World War II. She served as a tailoress on HMCS Conestogafrom October 1943 to February 1944, HMCS Stadaconafrom February 1944 to August 1944, HMCS Cornwallis from August 1944 to November 1945 and HMCS York from November 1945 until her discharge on December 5,1945. After the navy, Marguerite married Edward Morton on November 16, 1946. They had five children, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. They resided in the Greater TorontoArea. Marguerite had excellent cooking, knitting and sewing skills. Outside of the home, she worked in retail, as a factory labourer and also as an insurance receptionist. Marguerite passed away on June 23, 2011.
