261 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MOHR, Clayton Allan Clayton was born on September 30, 1896, in Philipsburg, Ontario, to John R. and Annie Catherine (Lantz) along with five siblings, Edward, Minnie, Herbert, Otillia, and Edna. Due to shortage of volunteers, draft letters were sent out and Clayton received his draft letter and enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in London, Ontario on May 29, 1918 with the Western Ontario Regiment. He left Ontario on September 10, 1918, arriving in England on September 15, 1918. He was transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion and taken to the Command Office in Kimmel Park. He was hospitalized with influenza on October 9, 1918, released fit to rejoin his unit on November 4, 1918. The war was over and Clayton was kept busy for over six months cleaning, gathering stock and equipment to be sent back to Canada. He received his discharge on June 19, 1919 and returned to Canada and his family in Philipsburg. He married Vera Muriel (Snyder) and they had three children, Walter, Donald and Idella. Clayton passed away in 1986 and is laid to rest in Oetzel Evangelical Cemetery in Ratzburg, North Easthope, Ontario. MONTGOMERY, Thomas Herbert Thomas was born in Bobcaygeon, Ontario on August 26, 1908 to Thomas Sr Montgomery and Harriett Hamilton. He moved to the New Liskeard area shortly after and became a prospector. He moved to Chapleau, ON where he married Ethel Buncombe, and they had a son Phillip. He remained there until he joined the Army (Regular Force) in August 1940 and served in the United Kingdom and in Northwestern Europe. He was stationed at Petawawa with the RCA and took his training there. He deployed to Great Britain and arrived on December 24, 1940 attached to 1 Cdn Artillery holding unit. While he was deployed, he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany star as well as the Canadian Defence Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He returned to Canada near the end of the war and returned to Montreal then Senneterre, QC where he remained until he died on August 3, 1953. MONTGOMERY, Phillip Leonard Phillip was born on February 28, 1935, in Chapleau, Ontario to parents Thomas Herbert Montgomery and Ethel Montgomery (Buncombe). He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on March 21, 1954 and was posted to RCAF North Bay where he married MaryAnn Nidd on October 12, 1957. Some time later, Phillip and Mary Ann moved to Comox, BC where he resided until his death on April 23, 1966. During a routine training mission out of Comox to Williams Lake, BC, the Search and Rescue twin engine Albatross crashed into the Hope Slide in dense fog. Five members of the crew perished including Co-Pilot Flt Lt Phillip Montgomery. He was survived by his wife and a daughter Holly. He is buried in North Bay Ont. There is a Plaque that has been erected in their memory at the slide site near Hope, British Columbia.
