257 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MILLER, Michael Kenneth “Mike” Mike was born on December 29, 1962, in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland. He served in the Reserves with the 2nd Battalion Royal Newfoundland Regiment from July 2, 1980 until his transfer to the Regular Force on July 25, 1985 as a skilled Infantryman (031) and assigned to the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR). During his career, he served with 3RCR in Winnipeg, Germany (1988-93), and Petawawa. While in Petawawa, he also served with 1RCR, Canadian Special Operations Regiment, CANSOFCOM and the Leadership company (2011-14). He was an instructor at CFRS Cornwallis, NS (199394) and the Battle School in Petawawa. Mike’s Theatres of Operation are noteworthy, Cyrus 1986, Croatia 1992, Bosnia 1998 and 2003-04, Kosovo 1999-2000, Afghanistan 2010 (extended tour), and Iraq 2017. Medals include General Campaign Star with Bar (Afghanistan), Special Service Medal (NATO), Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, UN Forces in Cyprus, UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, NATO Medal for Kosovo, NATO Balkans, NATO Bosnia, UNPROFOR Croatia, General Campaign Star, IRAQ and the Canadian Forces Decoration with clasps. Mike was also awarded the Commanders Commendation in Afghanistan. After a total of 42 dedicated years of service, Mike retired on December 29, 2022, at the rank of Warrant Officer. MILNE, James Alexander “Jim” Jim was born in Eden Mills, Ontario on December 7, 1923. At the age of seventeen, he joined the reserve army, then enlisted in the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade, Lorne Scots Regiment on January 15, 1943. He trained in the Armoured Corp as a tank driver and instructor. He later remustered into the Infantry as a rifleman in 1944. He served in France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, and Holland being discharged as a Corp. In May 1945, in Holland, he was severely wounded and was returned home to spend the next two years recovering. While inAppeldoorn, Jim signed the passes of Dutch families who delighted in waving them in the faces of the Germans. He was discharged on October 16, 1945. After the war, Jim married, had three children, and worked as a miller eventually purchasing the Grist Mill in Rockwood. Jim coached baseball, was a 26-year member of the Rockwood Lion’s club and a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197 for over 57 years. He took part in the Rockwood Remembrance Day Services and was in charge of the poppy drive until his passing on January 26, 2006. In March 1993, Jim received the Governor General’s 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medal for his contribution to his community and Canada. MILLS, Alfred Louis Alfred was born in Toronto, Ontario, on January 9, 1922. He worked for his father’s firm in Toronto and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as A/C2 on March 19, 1943. He completed training as an Air Gunner in Lancaster Bombers and was promoted to Pilot Officer and then Flying Officer. Alfred was awarded the Operational wings of the RCAF on completion of a tour of Operational Duty in action against the enemy with #431 Iroquois Squadron in England. Alfred was discharged from service on July 1, 1945. He returned to his wife Alice Dalgieish in Toronto and commenced to work and develop Chairman Mills from a chairtable rental firm into a comprehensive special event service. His wife Alice passed away and eventually Alfred met and married Beatrice Mills. They had a combined family of four children. Alfred’s favorite hobby was his thoroughbred horse farm near Aurora. He also, in his later years, enjoyed afternoons at Woodbine Racetrack. Alfred passed away on May 27, 1988.
