After being transferred to Oshawa with his employer, he transferred to The Ontario Regiment (RCAC) and retired as a Lieutenant-Colonel after commanding. It was an honour to have served in two of Canada’s original Armoured Regiments. During the Cold War period, there were few opportunities for Reservists or members of the Militia as they were then called, to serve outside their unit. Their role was primarily domestic security and civil defence. Unlike today, those Reservists were not as well trained, equipped or prepared for operational duties such as deployment toAfghanistan. However, Denis was Course Commander or member of the Directing Staff on many Reserve Captain qualifying courses in the winter at CFB Borden, or the summer at civilian facilities in Orangeville, Carleton University or Cornwall. He completed, in 1989, an assignment at NATO HQ in Brussels, Belgium where a NATO-wide exercise was occurring. He staffed the Military Desk at Canadian HQ, daily briefing Canada’s Military Representative (CANMILREP) and Canada’s Ambassador to NATO on the status of the war/exercise. He was released on September 21, 1992. Denis is widowed and lives in Windsor. He is a fouryear member of The Royal Canadian Legion Metropolitan Branch 594. He worked in the Suez Canal zone, where he was involved in the execution of schemes crossing the Sinai Desert to the Gulf of Aquaba. After sustaining a serious injury in Egypt, when he was run over by a military vehicle, Barrie returned to civilian life. He was discharged on October 30, 1952. Barrie was awarded the Nation Service Medal 1950-1952, the Suez Canal Medal, and the Canal Zone Medal. He is a ten-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Uxbridge Branch 170.
