243 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McGOWAN, John “Jack” Jack was born on June 21, 1903, in Kilsyth Scotland and emigrated to Brantford, Ontario at the age of two with his family. He went back to Scotland for early education and returned to complete grade 9 in Parry Sound where his father worked as a baker. Jack started as an electrician’s helper in 1926 with Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railroad in North Bay. He married Mairiam Grieve and had one daughter before enlisting on July 14, 1941 as a sapper. Jack served in several Ontario locations where he was described as neat, well disciplined, with above average intelligence, and in good health but underweight at 5’5” and 118 lbs. He was sent to the United Kingdom on July 20, 1943 where he was attached for a while to the American Army as Electrician C. He was discharged on February 23, 1945, returned to Canada, and was assigned six weeks rehab for Pernicious Anemia. Jack was awarded the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. After the War, Jack worked in North Bay as an electrician with the railroad. When Jack died on January 1, 1992 he had been a 33rd Degree Mason in both the Scottish and American Rites and 47-year member of Branch 23 in North Bay. McKIE (FOUNTAIN), Carlie Dolores Carlie was born on January 12, 1932, in Toronto, Ontario. In 1954, at the age of 22, Carlie joined the Navy and served on the stone frigate in Ottawa as a radio signal operator until 1960. She travelled overseas with the WRENS but little is known about her actual job. She came from a military family, her father and mother both served inWorldWar II. She was discharged in 1960. After returning to civilian life, she married Mike and they raised three children, Ian, Kendall, and Anne Lee. She joined The Royal Canadian Legion in Kitchener where she served for thirty years in many capacities on the executive. She resided in Waterloo from 1965 to 1991. Carlie passed away on April 22, 2022. McINTYRE, Harold Lloyd Harold was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 13, 1916. He moved to Acton, Ontario in 1926. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 15, 1942 and served with the 45th Canadian Army Transport Corp in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged on November 15, 1945. Harold passed away on March 29, 1995.
