241 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McELLISTRUM, Gordon Gordon was born on October 23, 1918, inWaterloo, Ontario, toWilliam and Hulda McEllistrum, along with eight siblings. He attended public school in Waterloo and furthered his education at Kitchener Collegiate Institute. Gordon enlisted in May 1941 and was assigned to the Royal Canadian Provost Corp where he did police duty until he was discharged in January 1946. He married Elaine (Motchman) on January 22, 1942, moved to New Hamburg and raised a family of seven children, six daughters and one son. He was employed at Seagram Distillery in Waterloo as a Still Operator for 43 years. He joined in with the Veterans of New Hamburg to establish a Royal Canadian Legion, obtaining a charter in 1952, he was an active member on the executive. He stayed on course with the Legion to the end, retiring in 2002 as a Charter Member, Past President, Life Member with fifty years of continuous service. His name is listed on the Veterans Memorial Plaque. He was always involved with police duties at any crowd gathering venue, Fall Fairs, Remembrance Parades, Horse Races, etc. Gordon passed away on September 22, 2002 and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg. McGARVEY, Robert John Robert was born in Meaford, Ontario on October 29, 1959. He moved out west at an early age with his family and joined the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in Edmonton, Alberta in September 1976. Following basic recruit training in CFB Cornwallis, NS, he completed basic seamanship training at CFB Esquimalt, BC followed by trade training as a radar technician at CFB Stadacona, Halifax, NS. Once trade qualified, he was posted to HMCS Algonquin(DDH 283), a tribal class destroyer that was assigned to Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) and was homeported at CFB Halifax. During his service, Robert took part in training exercises with other NATO countries in various parts of the world, mostly in the Atlantic Ocean around Europe or the Caribbean. Robert left the CAF in June 1980, after which he worked in various industries including residential construction, as a truck driver, and as a surveyor for a uranium mine in the Arctic, to name a few. He married an Army Medic, Florence Best, in 1989. Robert currently lives in Calgary and is working as a safety consultant and equipment operator trainer. He happily provides his services to Veterans Association in Calgary in delivering forklift training to Veterans. McFARLANE, Michael Mike was born in Toronto on September 28, 1962 and enlisted as a reservist with 25 Medical Company on June 9, 1980. He rose through the ranks from Private to Chief Warrant Officer, and was appointed as the Regimental Sergeant Major. He went on to be appointed as the first Reserve Non-Commissioned Member Advisor at Canadian Forces Health Services Group Headquarters in Ottawa. He held that appointment for a period of six years. He participated in relief during the Red River Flood in 1997 and Ontario Ice Storm in 1998. He returned to 25 Field Ambulance in Toronto in 2013 and commissioned from the ranks. He retired as a Major on September 28, 2022. Mike has been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 322 and Branch 606 for a total of 23 years.
