237 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McCABE, Garry Wayne Garry was born in Lindsay, Ontario on September 1, 1943. After finishing school in Lindsay, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on September 29, 1959. Serving with the Fort Garry Horse Armoured Corps, he was deployed in Canada and in Germany. He left the service on November 30, 1962 and went back to Lindsay, and worked for GM in Oshawa. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Sir Sam Hughes Branch 67 for 53 years. McCALLUM, James James was born in East Wawanosh, Huron County, Ontario, on July 30, 1886. He was the manager of a hardware store. James enlisted in Belgrave on January 25, 1916. He joined the 161st OS Bn. C.E.F. After arriving in England, he joined the 18th Bn. and rose through the ranks to earn the rank of Lieutenant. In February 1917, he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field and later a bar. He was wounded in September 1918 but returned to duty after recovery. He was in the 3rd C.M.G. Bn when he was dangerously wounded with a gunshot wound to the face in May 1918. He died of his wounds on May 10, 1918. McCALLUM, George George was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 7, 1912. He volunteered in the Army (Regular Force) in Ottawa, Ontario on September 9, 1939 at the rank of Sapper. On December 18, 1939, he left Halifax, NS and arrived in Gourock, Scotland on December 30, 1939. He qualified as a driver/mechanic while overseas. During service, he rose to the rank of L/Sgt. He was a small arms instructor, transport Sgt and motorcycle dispatch rider, and escorted a POW to Canada in 1944. He served in the United Kingdom, North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Northwestern Europe. He received the Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged on April 4, 1961. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 625. George passed away on October 6, 1996.
