235 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MATHESON, Shawn D. Shawn was born in London, United Kingdom on March 22, 1967. LCol (Ret’d) Shawn Matheson joined the CAF at CFRC Toronto on December 8, 1986 enrolling as an Officer Cadet in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. After Basic training Shawn was posted to the Royal Canadian Dragoons (RCD) at CFB Petawawa as a Troop Leader. He deployed to Cyprus and in 1990 was posted to Lahr, Germany serving with the 8th Canadian Hussars as a Tank Troop Leader. In 1991, Capt Matheson was posted to the Governor General’s Horse Guards as Regular Support Staff. In 1995, Shawn transferred to the Primary Reserve and served another 16 years with the Horse Guards. In Civilian life, Shawn became a Mississauga Firefighter in 1995. In 2003, he took a leave of absence from the Fire Service and deployed to Bosnia as part of Canada’s NATO Multi National Brigade HQ. After returning from Bosnia, Major Matheson was appointed as the Regimental 2IC of the GGHG and in 2007 he was promoted to the rank of LCol and appointed the Commanding Officer. In 2010, LCol Matheson was appointed the Commanding Officer of the 32 Brigade Battle School before retiring on October 14, 2011. He is a ten-year member of the Milton Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 136. McARTHUR, Angus Archie Angus was born in Lindsay Township on June 22, 1896. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on February 1, 1916 and served with the 160th Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Europe. He was discharged on April 6, 1919. Prior to his passing on Decembre 13, 1936, Angus resided in Tobermory, Ontario. MAY, Kenneth John Kenneth was born on November 19, 1921, in East York, Ontario. He joined the Canadian Army (Regular Force), Perth Regiment on September 14, 1942 and was deployed to the Italian Campaign until receiving seven gunshot wounds on December 20, 1944 when they were ambushed. He was in and out of hospitals until discharged on July 2, 1946. Ken married Gertrude Balabik on January 2, 1943. They were married for 71 years and had four children, Marlene, Lynda, Susan and Larry. He owned a gas service station in Agincourt. Ken has authored two books which chronicled his life and experiences over the years. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star andWar Medal 1939-1945. Ken has been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion at Branches 258 and 606 for a total of 42 years. Due to his extensive list of positions held and accomplishments in the Legion, he received a Life Membership in 1995 and the Meritorious Service Medal in 2004. Ken was very happy in the Kawartha Lakes Retirement Home in Bobcaygeon until August 8, 2023 when he passed away at the age of 101 years young and is resting in the Pineridge Memorial Gardens, Ajax.
