233 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARTIN, Arthur Edwin “Spike” Arthur was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 13, 1896. He enlisted on August 6, 1915, joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force, served as the rank of gunner in Unit 30 BTY CFA. He embarked for England from St. John on May 2, 1916. He served in France including Vimy and was wounded in action several times. He was discharged on February 19, 1919. Upon returning home, he became a police officer with the Canada Wide Force, then joined the OPP. He marriedAnna O’Neil in 1926 and they raised four children. They moved many places where he was stationed, then settled in the Strathroy area in 1940, where they remained. Arthur passed away on July 2, 1962, on the day of his retirement. MASON, Ian Allan Ian was born in Windsor, Ontario on August 28, 1936. On September 17, 1958, Ian went to London and joined the Black Watch at the Wolseley Barracks. His basic training was in Sussex, New Brunswick, six months in Gagetown, and in Cornwallis. After becoming a Junior NCO in Gagetown, he went to Bordon and trained with the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. Ian’s biggest thrill was when he was asked to join the Queen’s Honour Guard for two weeks when the Queen came to Canada in 1959. In 1959, Ian was married. He was released on October 12, 1964 and moved back to Windsor, Ontario. For the next thirty years, Ian worked for the Crysler Corporation. After he retired from Chrysler, Ian and his wife wintered in Florida. Ian is a proud 65-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 255 in Windsor. MARTIN, George Henry George was born in Tobermory, Ontario on February 19, 1910. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in June 1940 and served with the Grey and Simcoe Forresters in England, Germany, Holland and France. He was among the Canadian Troops who invaded Juno Beach in June 1944. He received the France and Germany Star and the Defence Medal. After his discharge, he worked for the Department of Lands and Forests. George passed away on August 6, 1986.
