231 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARCHAND, Norbert Norbert was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1919. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in 1938 and served with the Royal Montreal Regiment in Canada and England during World War II. He remained in England when his unit went to Italy. Norbert was discharged in 1946. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with overseas bar, War Medal 1939-1945 and 1939-1945 Star. Norbert resided in Ottawa from 1954 until his passing in 1976. MARSHALL, William John William was born on September 22, 1892, in Glenannan, Ontario, to William and Annie Marshall. Some time later, he moved to St. Joseph Island, east of Sault Ste. Marie. On his military documents it is written that he was a farmer and fireman by trade. William enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the 119th Overseas Battalion on March 15, 1916 and on December 5, 1916, he was transferred to the 52nd Battalion CEF. On September 3,1917, he was in action north of Lenz, France when he was killed in action by rifle fire. His body was never recovered and therefore his name appears on the Vimy Memorial at Vimy Ridge, France. He left behind a fiancée, Pauline M. Grace. His name is inscribed on the cenotaph in Richards Landing, St. Joseph Island, Ontario. MARSHALL, Andrew Oblander “Andy” Andy was born on October 4, 1920, in Elora, Ontario. He enrolled in the Canadian Army (Regular Force), Canadian Infantry Corps on April 9, 1942 at the age of 21 and served in Canada with the Pictou Highlanders qualifying as a Driver Mechanic before being posted overseas. He served with the Perth Regiment in Holland until after VE Day (May 8, 1945). He then was posted to the 3rd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry of Canada Regiment (Canadian Army Occupation Force) serving in Holland and Germany. He was promoted to Corporal in the Rifle Platoon. His service record states that he was a good shot, and describes him as a good and efficient soldier. He was awarded the France and Germany Star, and War Medal 1939-1945. When he was released from the army on March 7, 1946, he returned to Elora where he married and raised a family. He went to work for Beatty Bros. in Fergus. He worked at Beatty’s for over 25 years and was the administrator of Farmlines at the time of his retirement. Andy passed away on September 16, 2001.
