209 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LANGTON, Thomas Thomas was born in Toronto on March 26, 1883, the son of Thomas and Florence (McDonald) Langton. On February 28, 1916, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 180th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force in Toronto. On his attestation form, he is described as 32 years old and single. He listed his trade as foreman and stated he had no previous military experience. Thomas was commissioned to the rank of lieutenant shortly after joining. He sailed on the SS Olympic to arrive in England on November 21, 1916. After several months of training in England, he landed in France on April 25, 1917, assigned to the 75th Canadian Infantry Battalion. He suffered gunshot wounds in the legs on June 8, 1917, and was returned to Canada for medical treatment. Thomas was discharged on April 6, 1918, and later moved to Coldwater, Ontario. In 1935, he became a founding member of today’s Royal Canadian Legion Coldwater Branch 270 and was later elected as the branch’s very first president. Thomas passed away on June 1, 1935, in Toronto. LAUGHLIN, Joseph Edward Joseph was born in Coldwater, Ontario, on December 24, 1897. He was the son of Joseph Edward and Margaret (Lynch) Laughlin. By the time of World War I, the family had moved to Alberta. On May 3, 1918, Joseph enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Regina, Saskatchewan, with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was twenty years old and single. He listed his trade as farmer, and had no previous military experience. Coming in from the Royal North West Mounted Police, he was initially assigned to the Canadian Reserve Cavalry Regiment. Private Laughlin sailed on the SS Bellerophon to arrive in England on June 21, 1918. He was reassigned to the newly formed Canadian Tank Corps in October of that year, but the war ended before the unit could deploy to France. He returned to Canada for demobilization and was discharged on May 21, 1919. Joseph passed away in 1962 and is buried in the Daysland Cemetery near Strome, Alberta. LARABEE, Glenn Elwood Glenn was born in Merlin, Ontario on May 20, 1924. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on October 19, 1943 with the Brocksville Rifles CA. His active duty was guarding the prisoners of war in Jamaica. He also served in Sydney and in Aldershot. Upon his discharge on May 16, 1946, he returned to civil life and his former job at the Wallaceburg Brass Factory as a shipping clerk. Glenn passed away on May 22, 1999.
