203 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KURT, Walter Carl Walter was born on November 30, 1923, in Kitchener, Ontario, to Franz and Maria (Speck), along with six siblings: Gertrude, Emma, Henry (also serving), Albert, Carl and Reinholt. Prior to enlisting, Walter worked in a rubber factory, served with the Scots Fusiliers (Reserves) in Galt, and also worked on his father’s farm on Plains Road, New Dundee. Walter enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on October 7, 1942 with the Cape Breton Highlanders R.C.I.C. He was put through basic training in Galt and Hamilton before being shipped to England. Additional training was given before moving into Italy. Walter was killed in action on May 22, 1944 and is buried in Cassino War Cemetery in Italy. Private Walter Carl Kurt is commemorated on page 356 in the Second World War Book of Remembrance in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. KUZNIECOW, Teodor Teodor was born on September 18, 1915, in Kowel, Poland. He joined the Polish Army on March 22, 1938, and was assigned as a Pioneer to the 15th Wolves Infantry Regiment at D blin. The Germans attacked D blin on September 15, 1939, and Teodor was wounded and as a result he was discharged on September 18, 1939. In 1944, as the Russians advanced into Eastern Poland, Teodor and his whole family were taken by the Germans as forced labour to Germany. When World War II ended, he and his family were in the American sector of Germany. A son was born in 1946 and when the opportunity arose, they immigrated to Ipswich, South Dakota, USA. A daughter was born in Ipswich and when his work contract ended, he immigrated to St. Catharines, Ontario to join his wife’s family. For many years Teodor was a roofer with P.E.C. Roofing. After retiring in 1980, he spent many hours crafting beautiful custom kitchens with his son. He passed away on January 27, 2008. He was much loved by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Teodor was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Polish Veteran’s Branch for 54 years. KUZNIECOW, Joseph Zigniew Joe was born on April 2, 1946, in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was three years old when his family immigrated to South Dakota in the USA. In 1951, he and his family moved to Canada and settled in St. Catharines, Ontario. Joe started his school career at Victoria Public School, then Queen Mary Middle School and finally the St. Catharines Collegiate and Vocational School. While he was in high school he played football, winning the Senior Championship in 1963. He also rowed with the St. Catharines Collegiate Crew winning the U.S. Schoolboy Championship in 1964 in Poughkeepsie, NewYork. He also rowed with the Brock University crew. In 1964, during his teenage years at the Collegiate, he joined the Lincoln &Welland Regiment where he advanced to the rank of Corporal. He was released in 1970. Joe was a passionate fisherman spending many weeks in Northern Ontario at Old Woman Bay on the Michipicoten River and at High Falls, most often with his father. He was a skilled wood craftsman creating many custom kitchens, vanities etc., throughout the Niagara Peninsula. Joseph passed away on May 14, 2020 leaving behind three sisters, three nieces and a nephew.
