189 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ISLEY, William Henry “Bill” William “Bill”, the son of Henry and Alice Isley, was born on April 2, 1925 in GlenWilliams, Ontario. At the age of 20, Bill enlisted in Toronto in 1944. Training at Brantford, London, Woodstock, Camp Borden and Debert NS, he qualified as a tank driver. Arriving overseas, Bill was transferred to the Loyal Edmonton Regiment which was engaged in battle in Italy. As part of Operation Goldflake, he landed in France in March 1945. By April 1945, word was received that Bill had been wounded in action that resulted in flesh wounds to the scalp and a fractured left shoulder blade. Following hospitalization in Scotland and the end of the war in Europe, he was repatriated to Canada. Private William Isley received his discharge in Toronto on April 25, 1946. For his service, he received the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. William was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Erin Branch 442 for 45 years and passed away at age 66 on July 12, 1991. JACKSON, Philip Thomas “Phil” Philip, son of Philip Edward and Constance Ada (Smith), was born on December 22, 1914, in Streetsville, Ontario. Phil enlisted on August 7, 1940 with the Canadian Army, Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Alongside two brothers, Harry and Ted, Phil left Halifax in May 1943 aboard the ship Andies. Upon landing in England, Phil joined the Toronto Scottish Regiment, entered into France, and fought on into Germany. Unfortunately, Harry was killed in action and didn’t return home. For his service, Phil received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and France and Germany Star. He was discharged on October 1, 1945 and returned to Dunville, Ontario where he fathered four daughters and resided until his death. His post war life included employment with the Department of National Defence where he worked at the Dunville Airport. Later, he moved on to work for the city of Brantford and then the town of Dunnville until retirement. In 1948, Phil became a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 142. He received a lifetime membership and served in various executive positions. Phil passed away on March 10, 2008, in his 94th year. JACKSON, Donald S. “Don” Don was born on March 11, 1921, in Chatham, Ontario. He enlisted in the CanadianArmy on October 23, 1941 and saw action in the Lake Superior Regiment during World War II. Don was later discharged on November 6, 1945 and earned the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and 1939-1945 Star. He later left Ridgetown, Ontario to serve his country again and reenlisted on May 11, 1951. He trained with the R.C.R.’s in Calgary and later in Petawawa before going over to Korea. He was discharged with the rank of Private on July 17, 1953 earning the United Nations Service Medal. Private Jackson served a total of nineteen years of which fourteen years were with the nonpermanent militia. He was a long-time member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 28 in Chatham. Don passed away on September 14, 1997.
