185 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOLMSTROM, Hart Milton Hart was born in Kenora, Ontario on October 6, 1935 and was raised in North Western Ontario. In 1954, at the age of eighteen, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force). His fifteen years of service was served in St. Jean, Camp Borden, Trenton, 4Wing Baden-Sollingen, Cold Lake/Chilliwack and Sioux Lookout with 422 Squadron 4F Wing. Hart obtained accreditation in three trades: Air Craft Technician, Avionics, and Refrigeration/Air Conditioning. He was released in 1969. Having served over twelve years, he was awarded the CD Medal and has been recognized for over fifty years as a valued member of The Royal Canadian Legion – present affiliation Alliston Branch 171. The knowledge and discipline gained in service reflected well for his future career in civilian life. Hart has been married to Marilyn for over 66 years. They have one daughter and one granddaughter and have been residing in Alliston since 1970. HOSTETLER, Charles Woodrow Charles was born on October 9, 1916, in Baden, Ontario, to Harry and Roxie (Toman) along with three siblings, Donald, Wanda, and Ilene. He attended Stratford Normal School where he also learned how to speak German and write in French. Upon graduation, he became a teacher at S.S. #9 Manheim School. Charles enlisted on August 9, 1941 with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) 426 (RAF) Squadron. After finishing his training as a Flying Officer, he was shipped overseas where he made 54 flights on Lancaster and Halifax Bombers. He was navigating a Halifax Bomber on a raid when he was hit by flak and then shot down by a night fighter on July 29, 1944 at Lasbek, eight kilometers south of Bad Oldensloe. He is buried in the Hamburg Cemetery in Germany. Flying Officer Charles Woodrow Hostetler is commemorated on page 339 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. HOOVER, Robert Harvey Robert was born in West Wawanosh, Huron County, on February 5, 1895. The family moved to Grey Township and he attended Normal School in Stratford and became a teacher. He taught for two years before enlisting on June 26, 1916 with the 161st Huron Battalion. He trained at Camp Borden and went overseas in November and onto France before Christmas, where he remained on active service until the end of the war in November 1918. He was awarded the Military Medal of Bravery in the field. He served with the 58th Battalion in France and 8th Reserve Battalion and also served in England. He was discharged on January 14, 1919. He returned to teaching on his return to Walton, Ontario and was married. They had two children. He retired from teaching and became manager of Dominion Stores in Listowel and Mount Forest. Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, he became an orderly in the Westminster Army Hospital in London, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1960. Robert died suddenly on October 1, 1976.
