183 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOGAN, Richard Thomas Richard was born in Montreal, Quebec on May 4, 1891. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on February 11, 1915 and served in Canada, England and France during World War I. He served as a Lieutenant originally with the 199th Battalion and then became a member of the 87th Battalion in France. Richard was wounded in France and was in hospital for six months after the end of the war before being able to return to Canada. He was discharged on July 17, 1919. Richard resided in Ottawa in the 1930s. He passed away on April 6, 1949. HOLMES, Raymond Laurence Ray was born in McKillop Township, Ontario, on May 3, 1895, to Robert and Bertha Holmes. His father passed away and as a young man, the family moved to Swift Current, Saskatchewan. His mother remarried to John Thompson. He was a farmer by trade. Ray enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Winnipeg on December 21, 1914 with the 32nd Bn. He was shipped overseas on February 23, 1915 and travelled on the SS Vadaland. He joined the 10th Bn and in August he suffered a gunshot wound to the right knee. After recovery, he returned to action and in November 1916 he suffered shrapnel wounds in the left shoulder. Ray also served with the 8th Bn and was in the Battle of the Somme in France. He was discharged in August 26, 1919 in Toronto. He married Lillian Wood from England and had one daughter. He returned to the west. Ray died on August 12, 1984 in Colma, San Mateo County, California, at the age of 89. HOLMAN, Robert Harry “Bob” Bob was born on November 6, 1916, in Whitby, Ontario. He attended school in Markham, Ontario. In September 1939, he enlisted in the CanadianArmy (Regular Force) with the Ontario Regiment (Tank) and began training at Camp Borden. Bob married Mae (De Rusha) on October 14, 1939 in Claremont, Ontario. On July 1, 1941, then overseas, the Regiment trained and refitted in England. The 11th Canadian Armoured Regiment landed in Sicily on July 1, 1943 and they battled through Sicily and Italy. On March 6, 1945, the Regiment was mobilized to the European Theatre and continued to battle through Holland until the cessation of war. In August 1945, Bob returned from overseas. Bob and Mae had two sons, John and Ron, and settled in Stouffville, Ontario. Bob joined the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 459 and was elected president in 1954. Bob and family later moved to Orillia, Ontario. Opening a sports and marine store. After the store closed, Bob worked with the Department of Highways. Bob and family moved to Claremont. Bob was active in the community enjoying events while maintaining ties with the Royal Canadian Legion. Bob passed away on September 24, 1961 in Claremont and is interred in the Clairmont Cemetery.
