181 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HIRD, John Alexander John was born in Alma Township, Huron County, on December 14, 1895. He traveled to London and enlisted on May 21, 1918. He completed training overseas in July 1918 on the Belleraphon to land in England. He was with the 1st Depot Battalion W.O.R. and was taken on strength by the 4th Canadian Res. Battalion as a sapper. He spent some time in hospital and was discharged in November 1918 for demobilization. John was discharged on July 18, 1919. He returned home to farm and was married in 1925 and had one daughter. He retired to the Village of Atwood. John passed away on October 5, 1994. HODGSON, Sherrill Lorraine Sherrill was born in Orillia, Ontario on June 13, 1954. As her father George Osburn was military, Sherrill grew up on bases across the country, including CFB Borden, CFB Chilliwack, CFB Meaford and CFB Petawawa. At the age of 18, on September 5, 1972, Sherrill joined the military straight out of high school. She completed her Basic Training at Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in 1972. Trades training was completed at Borden in Logistics, as a Supply Technician. Postings took Sherrill to CFB Edmonton, CFB Petawawa, CFB Winnipeg, and CFB Gagetown before she retired as a Warrant Officer after 20 years of service. Currently Sherrill lives in Uxbridge, Ontario. She has been an active and dedicated Executive member of The Royal Canadian Legion Uxbridge Branch 170, for the past 15 years, including having held the position of Branch President. HOBBS, John Henry Jr. John was born in Bristol, England on September 15, 1888. His family immigrated to Canada in the early 1900s. He was the oldest of seven children and alongside two of his brothers, they enlisted in the CEF. Before the war, John worked as a locomotive engineer for the Grand Trunk Railway. He was 27 years old when he signed his attestation papers on November 11, 1915 in the 70th Canadian Infantry Battalion. He served in Canada, England and France. Private Hobbs fought with the 58th Battalion in France starting in June 1916. He was reported missing after action during the Battle of the Somme on October 8, 1916 and later presumed dead. He has no known grave. His name is inscribed on the Vimy Memorial.
