He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on September 27, 1940 and joined the Toronto Scottish Regiment at the age of sixteen. He served as a NCO for approximately five years. He received the training of Motor Mechanic Group C and driving instructor. He held the rank of Lance Sgt at discharge on June 20, 1946. He joined the Reserves from November 3, 1946 as a gunner and was discharged on October 31, 1949. He settled in Cobourg and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Cobourg Branch 133 for 37 years. Edward passed away on April 9, 1996. HACKBART, Oscar John Oscar was born on March 23, 1895, in Bamberg, Ontario to Carl (Charles) and Margarertha along with eight siblings, Albert, Edwin, Charlie, Clara, Harvey, Margarete, Nelson, and Olga. Prior toWorldWar I, Oscar worked at Steinman Farms. Oscar received the draft letter to report for duty. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and was attached to the 1st Depot Battalion in London, Ontario on May 23, 1918. He sailed from Canada on September 10, 1918, arrived in England on September 25, 1918, and transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion in Kimmel Park Camp in Shorncliffe. It was noted that he had a vision problem. He was treated for Spanish Flu from October 17, 1918 and released from hospital on November 15, 1918. The war was over and Oscar was kept to help gather equipment to be sent back to Canada. He was shipped back to Canada aboard the Durham Castle and was discharged onAugust 31, 1919. Oscar worked at Canada Barrel and Keg inWaterloo for over thirty years. He married Eugenia (Doering) and they raised five children, Roy, Audrey, Robert, Phyliss and Lorne. Oscar passed away on February 24, 1989 and is laid to rest in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Heidelberg, Ontario. GUZIAK, Joseph Julian Joseph was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA on November 12, 1914. He moved to Toronto, Ontario around 1919 or 1920 and lived there for most of his life. He enlisted in the Army on July 22, 1942 and served in the Armoured Corps. He then transferred to the RCEME as a tire maintenance mechanic. He served in Scotland and in Belgium during World War II until his discharge on February 6, 1946. Joseph received the France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and Defence Medal. In civilian life, he was a floor layer and finisher. Joseph passed away on March 11, 1993.
