163 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GOLD, John Bryan “Jack” Jack was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on July 22, 1946. He enlisted in the Army (Reserve Force) in 1963 and served with the Elgin Regiment, Royal Canadian Armoured Corps, Canadian Militia in Canada until his release in 1966 at the rank of Sergeant. After his release, Jack began working for the Wabash Railroad in St. Thomas in 1967, then the Norfolk Western Railway ending with the Norfolk Southern in 2007. GOULDEN, David Richard Henry David was born in Wales on May 19, 1913. He joined the war effort in 1939 at the age of 26. He served in Italy (CASF) and in Holland with 1st Division Petrol Co., R.C.A.S.C. After the war, he moved his family to Welland, Ontario. He worked for Clares Moving, the Railroad and finally Canada Post retiring at the age of 64. David and his wife raised four children, two born in England, and two born in Welland. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Welland Branch 4 for over twenty years. David passed away on December 25, 1976. GOLD, Norman Bryant Norm was born on October 30, 1916, in St. Thomas, Ontario. He signed up in the Army (Regular Force) in Chatham, Ontario on March 12, 1942 with the 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards. After being shipped over to England, Norm saw action in North Africa as part of the 5th Canadian Armoured Division. He helped free Sicily from the Germans, beginning with two battles, the first in July/August 1943 in Adrano, and the second in the Troina Valley. Crossing the narrow Strait of Messina, they would begin to push the Germans out of Italy beginning at the battle of Reggio on September 3, 1943, situated at the southern tip of Italy moving northward fighting the Germans in major battles in the Liri Valley, at the Gothic Line, completing their objective in December 1944. Norm also saw action in France and Belgium. He received the King George Medal, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, France and Germany Star, 19391945 Star and Italy Star. After his discharge on November 9, 1945, he joined Ontario Hydro in St. Thomas retiring after 44 years of service. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 41 in St. Thomas. Norm passed away on December 24, 2008 and was laid to rest in the Elmsdale Cemetery in St. Thomas.
