161 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GILLETT, George William George was born in Stratford-on-Avon on May 28, 1937. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on December 5, 1955 and served with the Tank Corps of the BritishArmy, in the 15th/19th Kings Royal Hussars Regiment. He trained in Carlisle, England before boarding a troop ship at Southampton bound for Malaya (now Malaysia) where he served for two years. While serving overseas, George was involved in foot patrols, searching for hidden food stored by communist supporters, and curfew control. He was discharged on December 5, 1957. Currently, George lives in Uxbridge, Ontario. GODFREY, Ernest Maitland Ernest was born on July 12, 1917, just outside of Coldwater, Ontario, on what was known at the time as “Godfrey Hill”. He was the son of Durewood and Grace Godfrey of Coldwater. After school, he made a living doing odd jobs and as a general labourer at the Stone Quarry carrying dynamite for blasting and moving rocks. In 1937, he married Velma Godfrey, a hairdresser, and he attended a hairdresser school to get his own licence. During World War II, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force). He was promoted to the rank of Corporal and served overseas from 1943 until after the war ended in September 1945. While overseas, he earned a little extra money cutting hair for the troops. When he returned from the war, he and his wife worked together as hairdressers, eventually opening their own hair salon, the first in the Coldwater area. Ernest was also known for his commitment and dedication to minor hockey in the area. He was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion and a member of Coldwater Branch 270. Ernest passed away on October 2, 1979, and was laid to rest in Coldwater Cemetery. GLOWACKI, Tadeusz Tadeusz was born in Medwedowka, Poland on September 28, 1927. In 1940, Tadeusz and his family were deported to a slave labor camp in Siberia. In 1942, he left the Soviet Union with the Polish Army, which was organized by General Władysław Anders. In 1943, the Polish Air Force Command received a message that approximately 1,500 boys from Soviet Union prison camps had arrived in the Middle East with General Anders’ 2nd Corps. OnAugust 12, 1943, Tadeusz enlisted with the Royal Air Force (Regular Force) in Liverpool, where he was billeted at the RAF Station in Halton and enrolled in the Air Apprentice Technical School, Halton. The Air Apprentice Technical School at Halton was disbanded on March 11, 1948, and Tadeusz was discharged with an RAF Rank of AC2 on November 22, 1948. He was awarded the Polish Air Force Medal and War Service Medal. On April 10, 1952, Tadeusz arrived in Halifax as a landed immigrant and joined his parents, brother and sister who had settled in Edmonton, Alberta following World War II. Tadeusz became a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Polish Veterans Branch 418 on May 24, 1975, and was President of Branch 418 and received Life Membership. He passed away on July 10, 2003.
