151 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FLETCHER, George Harry George was born in Creemore, Ontario on March 23, 1923. He volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in 1943. On May 19, 1944, Flight Sergeant G. H. Fletcher completed the Ab Initio Gunnery Course as anAir Gunner. He was assigned to 415 Squadron, The Swordfish Squadron. Arriving in England in June 1944, he started training on the two engine Wellington Bombers as a mid upper turret gunner. After the war, George moved from Alton, Ontario to Orangeville, Ontario, got married to his war bride Anne and raised a family of seven. George was a successful car mechanic and owned the Texaco service station in Orangeville. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Orangeville Branch 233. George passed away on June 29, 2011. FORD, William Martin William was born on April 19, 1921, in Brantford, Ontario. During his wartime service, he joined the Royal Navy in Newfoundland. He enlisted on June 5, 1940 with a status of Ordinary Seaman and served in the Royal Navy during World War II with the 8th Naval Contingent on the HMCS Royal Arthur ship N Class 21. He saw action with the Navy in the Middle East and other theatres of war on several ships including the Aurania, Pembroke, Cormorant, Saka, Belgium, Cleopatra, and the Avalon III. His bravery awarded him five medals: Defence Medal, North African Star, Africa Star, Atlantic Star, and Indiae IMP:GEORGIVS VI G.BR.OMN:Rexet. He was discharged from the Avalon III on April 23, 1946 and released in Class A. Upon discharge from the Royal Navy, he returned to civilian life in St. John’s, Newfoundland working in one of their foundries. He moved to Toronto in 1950 with his wife Elizabeth (Green) and they both started work on October 23, 1950 at the Prestolite Battery Company. William passed away in his 58th year on November 11, 1979. FORD, Arthur Russell Arthur was born in Guelph, Ontario on June 3, 1920. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on June 4, 1940 and served as a munitions driver with 11th Field Regiment Artillery (Guelph) in Canada, Britain, and Northwest Europe. He was honourably discharged on October 18, 1945 and received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. He was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197. He resided in Acton from 1945 until his passing on May 20, 2013.
