147 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FISCHER, Christian Christian was born in Logan Township, Ontario on December 16, 1894, the son of August and Amelia Fisher, and the brother to eight siblings. The family moved to Cranbrook, Ontario where he was a farmer. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 34 Battalion in Stratford on January 22, 1915. He was denied at that time and he moved to St. Thomas where he became a locomotive fireman. He enlisted again on March 25, 1916 with the 91st Bn. in St. Thomas. He went overseas in June 1916 on the SS Olympic, joined the 73rd Bn, and was in France in November 1916. He was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to the shoulder in September 1917. He recovered in England and served with the Military Police until leaving England in September 1919 and was discharged on September 16, 1919. He returned to the Cranbrook area for a time and then moved to Kitchener where he was a superintendent of John Walters and Son of Kitchener until his retirement. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kitchener Branch 50. Christian passed away on June 23, 1974 and is buried in Brussels Cemetery. FISCHER, Henry John Henry was born on September 17, 1913, in New Hamburg, Ontario, to John and Matilda Fischer along with one brother, Harold. In June 1943, Henry enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) and was put through a very serious training program throughout Canada. When in Europe, he served in Belgium, Germany, England, France, and Holland. His letters to his wife always expressed thanks for the care packages and signed off with “all my love across the ocean and a kiss on every wave”. His daughter Karen mentioned his love of going to towns in France on Saturdays, the ladies always served the soldiers French fries and eggs. She claims that was their Saturday night meal for all the years she could remember. He was discharged in February 1946. Henry married Edith (Niebergall), and they had three children: Gerald, who died in infancy, Karen (Zehr), and Jim Fischer. He was employed with the New HamburgWorks Department. He joined with other Veterans from New Hamburg and obtained a charter for a legion in town. Henry was a Charter Member, Life Member, Past President of The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 with 36 years of service. Henry passed away on December 19, 1988 and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg. FISCHER, Frederick William Frederick was born on June 13, 1896, in Logan Township, Perth County, Ontario, the son of Mr. August Fischer and Mrs. Amelia Fischer Radditz. As a young man, he moved to Kitchener to find work as a labourer. He decided to enlist in the Army (Regular Force) on January 30, 1918 in London. His older brother, Christian, was already overseas at the time. He was with the 1st Depot Battalion W.O.R and also with the 78th Battalion. Frederick was hospitalized in London, Ontario with measles for two weeks. He returned to the 1st Bn. and on August 23, 1918 was discharged on demobilization and was struck off strength on return to the registrar’s records on August 9, 1918. He was given a medical discharge on January 6, 1919 and returned to Kitchener for employment. He lived in Cranbrook for fifteen years. Frederick passed away on December 21, 1982 in Toronto and is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto.
