145 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FAIR, Frederick Alexander Frederick was born on July 3, 1922, in Guelph, Ontario, to William Henry and Elizabeth (Card) along with eight siblings. At the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in 1940 with the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Dental Corps. Fred transferred to the 11th Armoured Regiment, his unit was shipped overseas, and they fought in Sicily and Italy from one end to the other. They then were sent into France to join an existing battle, fought their way to Nijmegen, Holland where their part in the war was done. He also served in Belgium and Germany. Fred somehow received the name Sandy. Discharged in October 1945, he bought a farm with his Veterans Land Act. After about ten years, he sold the farm and bought one just outside of Chesterfield. In 1948, he married Olive Edith (Weicker) and they raised seven children. Sandy joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532 in New Hamburg in 1960 and was a member for thirty years. His hobbies were flying his plane and collecting antique engines. Olive and Sandy parted ways in the late eighties, Sandy remarried (Joan Connel). He passed away on November 23, 1990 and is laid to rest in Chesterfield Cemetery. FENTON, Herbert Bishop Herbert was born in Birmingham, England, on July 12, 1887. He came to Canada as a British Home child at the age of five with his thirteen-year-old sister in June 1893, to Stratford, Ontario. Mrs. Richard Fenton went with a neighbour by train to Stratford, as the neighbour was picking up a child. Mrs. Fenton fell in love with this little boy, Herbert Bishop, and brought him back to their farm in Amabel Township where he had a wonderful life. He continued to farm with his father in Saugeen Township until enlisting in the Army (Regular Force) with the 18th Battalion on September 29, 1914 in Port Elgin. He went to London on April 29, 1915, then France in September 1915. Herbert developed inflammation in his knees and joints and was diagnosed with myalgia. From April 1916 until he was discharged on October 31, 1917, he spent time in several hospitals in France, Wales, London, England, and London, Ontario. He returned to find his father had sold the Saugeen Farm and then bought farmland north of Port Elgin. He farmed until retiring in 1948 to Port Elgin. He married Mabel Sieffert and raised a family of five. Herbert passed away on September 28, 1954 and was buried in Sanctuary Park Cemetery, Port Elgin, Ontario. FAULHAFER, Gordon E. Gordon was born on June 25, 1919, in North Easthope Township to Edward and Margaret (Sage), along with one brother, Walter, and one sister, Ruby. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Kitchener on November 20, 1941. Due to chronic bronchitis, he was kept from going overseas. He was therefore assigned with the Royal Canadian Service Corps as a cook in Wolseley Barracks, London. Sergent Gordon Faulhafer was discharged on March 14, 1946. He married Peggy (Thomas) and they raised two girls, Betty Lou and Judy. Gord worked for his brother Walter on masonry work. He also worked in the bar at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532 where he was a member for 52 continuous years. He was a member of Restless Seniors, carried a flag with the Colour Party for every parade, playing darts, cards, and singing, taking Sunday car rides and singing with his girls. He was a volunteer fire fighter and was presented with a thirty-year long Service Medal from the Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst. He was known for his strong opinions, being fair-minded and a great listener. Gordon passed away in the Bonnie Brae Nursing Home in Tavistock on October 23, 2012 and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg.
