141 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ELLWOOD, James Neil “Jim” Jim was born into a military family in Sudbury, Ontario on August 2, 1960 while his dad was deployed to the Congo. He participated in the Navy League and sea cadets. On June 21, 1977, he joined the Primary Reserves with 723 Communication Squadron (Halifax) reaching the rank of MCpl. He transferred to the Regular Force on September 9, 1985 and served on seven bases until August 5, 2015 when he transferred as a Major to the Reserves with 32 Combat Engineer Regiment (Toronto). Jim was deployed to Operation Snow Goose (Cyprus), Operation Central (Honduras), Operation Attention (Afghanistan) and Operation Impact (Iraq). Some of his work projects included the Quebec ice storm, Y2K operations, army Atlantic HQ in reacting to grounding aircraft during 911 and support roles for fires, flood, the pandemic and snowstorms. Jim retired on May 31, 2021. He met Mary Gibbons from Newfoundland in Summerside PEI while they were on course together in 1980 and were married in 1985. They have three children all of whom are grown and successful. They now have one grandson. Jim and Mary currently live in Toronto. Jim currently works as a public servant with DND Real Property Operations Group. EMERSON, Ralph Hay Ralph was born in Nestleton, Ontario in 1915 to Malcolm and Ethel Emerson. He attended Port Perry High School and The Peterborough Normal School. Before enlisting, he worked at Thorne, Mulholland, Howson, and McPherson Chartered Accountants. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in May 1942 and received his navigator wings and commission at Portage la Prairie in June 1943 then immediately went overseas. He was assigned to the RAF Squadron 76. Ralph was part of the crew of the Halifax bomber on December 26, 1944 which participated in an attack on St. Vith, Belgium. The aircraft was downed by flak with only one survivor, P.O. Kenneth Mason, of Chippawa, Ontario. Ralph was on his final mission of his first tour. He was buried at Heverlee War Cemetery in Belgium. Ralph was brother to F.O. Edgar Emerson D.F.C., Ellen (Bird), Frank, Donald, Gladys (Stutt) and Irene (Witherly). EMBURY, William James William was born in Coboconk, Ontario on August 25, 1897. He was drafted into the Army (Regular Force) on October 31, 1917. Private William James Embury attested on January 3, 1918. He served with honour in England and in France with the CEF 1st Depot, E. O. Reg and 2nd Canadian Infantry, East Ontario Regiment during World War I. After he was honourably discharged on April 24, 1919, he returned to Ontario and later married and had a family. William passed away on February 10, 1958.
