137 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND EADY, Russell Gordon Russell was born on July 6, 1897, to parents Thomas Eady and Ellen Cowdrey in Foresters Falls, Ontario. His attestation paper indicates his prior trade was a farmer. On October 25, 1917, at age 20, Russell enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Ottawa, Ontario into the 1st Depot Bn (EOR) to serve during World War I. His brothers, Thomas H. Eady (25th Battery C.F.A.) and Calvin Eady (3rd Bn CEF) were also serving. Russell embarked from Halifax, NS on February 21, 1918 onboard the SS Melita and arrived in Liverpool, England on March 4, 1918. On August 9, 1918, he was transferred to the 21st Bn and sent to France. In early September, the 21st Bn took part in the assault on the Drocourt-Quéant Line and the crossing of the Canal du Nord. Russell returned to Canada and was discharged on May 24, 1919 in Kingston, Ontario. He found employment with the CNR and in December 1929, he married Rauha E. Blomquist. They lived in Port Arthur, Sioux Lookout and finally settled in Redditt, Ontario. He remained with the CNR until his retirement in 1961. Russell Eady died on June 21, 1967 at age 69 and was buried at Redditt Township Cemetery, Redditt, Ontario. EDGE, Raymond Raymond was born on June 7, 1922, to parents Walter Blears Edge and Ethel Withey in Barking, England. He graduated from Runnymede Collegiate Institute, and started work as a teller at the Huron & Erie Mtge Corp. Raymond was an avid participant of hockey, rugby and lacrosse. On January 28, 1942, at age 19, Raymond voluntarily enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) in Toronto into the RCAF #1 Manning Depot Toronto, Ontario. His father, Walter B. Edge (3rd Div Signal Co.) also served during the Great War. Raymond departed from Halifax, NS, and arrived in the UK on July 1, 1943. He was commissioned as a RCAF F/O on October 30, 1943. He was later deployed to Italy where he served with the RCAF 417 (City of Windsor) Squadron at RAF base Bellaria, Italy. F/O Edge was killed while flying his Spitfire aircraft MT 688 on a bombing operation against enemy gun positions twenty miles north-west of Faenza, Italy. Raymond Edge died on January 20, 1945, at the age of 22 , and was buried at Ravenna War Cemetery, Italy. He is commemorated on Page 512 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance, Ottawa, Canada. EADY, Thomas Harvey Thomas was born on December 21, 1895, to parents Thomas Eady and Ellen Cowdrey in Foresters Falls, Ontario. Thomas’ attestation paper indicates his prior trade was a general labourer. On September 14, 1917, at age 21, Thomas voluntarily enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Petawawa, Ontario into the 74th Battery C.F.A. to serve during World War I. Other serving family members were his brothers, Russell G. Eady (21st Bn CEF) and Calvin Eady (3rd Bn CEF (D of W)) WWI, and son, Flt Sgt Pilot Irwin James Eady (RCAF 402 Squadron) killed on active service February 23, 1942. Thomas embarked from Halifax, NS onboard the SS Metagama and arrived in Glasgow, Scotland on March 11, 1918. While in France he served with the 25th Battery C.F.A. On May 26, 1919, he was discharged at Ottawa and upon returning to Canada he worked as a Supervisor for Ontario Hydro at the Sir Adam Beck Hydroelectric Generating project, Niagara Falls and was also involved with other hydro projects. Thomas died on February 20, 1960, at the age of 64, while still employed with Ontario Hydro. He was buried at Howard Cemetery, Foresters Falls, Ontario.
