129 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DOWD, Garret John “Garry” Garry was born in Ottawa on February 11, 1942. On September 15, 1961, he enlisted in RC SIGS and was posted to Carp (EASE) bunker in July 1963 as part of 1 Army Signal Squadron, Message Centre, FWC and Crypto. In 1965, he was promoted to Cpl, posted to CFS Lowther (Comm Detachment) in 1970, and posted toAFCENT, The Netherlands (Tapijnkazerne) (TRC) in 1972. Garry was promoted to MCpl in 1976 and posted back to CFS Carp. Crypto, MC and STRAD. In 1979, he went on the year-long French Course, promoted Sgt in 1980, and was posted to 764 Comm Sqn Ottawa (CommFac). In 1983, he was promoted to WO, posted to the NATO site at Carp (NICS) and back to CFS Carp (OSAX) in 1986; UNDOF, Damascus, Syria in December 86/March 87. Back to Carp again, he was promoted to MWO, posted to Norfolk in 1988, VASACLANT - Trg and Manpower (ROCLANT), and (CNDA) Ottawa in 1992. He was promoted to CWO in 1993, posted to NDHQ (DCOMSEC) and Forces Reduction program in 1994. He retired as a CWO Comm Op on September 15, 1994. His medals include: CD2, SM (NATO), PK, UNDOF, and Quilt of Valour in October 2022. He attended all of his trade courses at Vimy, Kingston and my SLC at Camp Borden. DREWERY, Bertram Ernest “Bert” Bertram was born in Charing Cross, Ontario on December 28, 1919. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Reserve Force) in August 1941 and did training at #2 Manning Depot Brandon, Manitoba; #12 Brandon, Manitoba and #19 Virden, Manitoba. Bert received his pilot’s wings on October 22, 1942. He was eventually stationed in Scotland as the pilot of a Halifax Bomber with #429 Squadron. Their Halifax aircraft #NR 197 was shot down during operations over Norway. All seven members of the crew are buried together at the Sandefjord Church Cemetery. Bert died on his 25th birthday. DOYLE, Robert John Robert was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on June 27, 1942. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on February 25, 1960 and served with the 2nd RCHA. He was discharged in February 1963. Robert also served in the Reserve Force with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment from July 6, 1964 to June 1965 and with 29th Field Regiment (Guelph, Ontario) from September 1966 to March 1968. He has been residing in Acton, Ontario since 1965 and has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197 for 48 years.
