113 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CUMMING, Tracy Michelle Tracy was born in Uxbridge, Ontario on September 28, 1968. She signed up in the Air Force (Regular Force) in Brantford Ontario in 2003 and served with the Canadian Forces Military Police posted to CFB Borden. While posted at CFB Borden, she served as a patrol officer, Instructor and was an investigator with the Canadian Forces National Investigation Unit (CFNIS). She completed tours in Kandahar, Afghanistan as well as a posting to the Embassy of Canada in Kabul, Afghanistan. She released in 2013 as a MCpl and received the General Campaign Star – South-West Asia medal. CZARTOWSKI, Czesław Jan Czesław was born on August 15, 1897, in Warsaw, Poland. In 1917, he joined the Polish Military. While tasked as District Watch inWarsaw, he fled a German patrol with the help of the underground. While returning to Warsaw in 1918, he helped disarm a German patrol at Pułtusk and assisted in capturing a German stronghold guarding a bridge. In 1921, he participated in the POLISH-BOLSHEVIK campaign and was wounded at KIEV. For action in World War I, he was awarded the Polish War Medal 1918-1921 and Wound Bar. At war’s end, he was posted to KRESY-CERKOWNO where he served until the outbreak of World War II. He was arrested in January 1940 by the Russians and held prisoner until 1944 when he was released to join the Polish 2nd Corps under General Anders in the Middle East. He was reunited with his sons in Jerusalem. He fought the entire Italian Campaign with the 5th KRESOWA Division for which he was awarded the Polish Bronze Cross of Merit with Swords, the Monte Cassino Cross, the Italy Star and the 1939-1945 Star. After WorldWar II, he was discharged in 1948 and immigrated to Canada and lived in Welland and Dunville, Ontario until his death in June 1968. CUSHING, Hildred Dorothy “Heidi” Heidi was born in Toronto on March 13, 1924. Founded in 1942, the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS), often called the “Wrens”, performed a wide variety of non-combatant roles ashore, both in Canada and overseas. Heidi joined the Navy (Regular Force) with the WRCNS in 1942 in Toronto at 18 years of age, inspired by her father’s service in World War I. She completed her Naval training in Galt, Ontario, and her training as a Vehicle Transport Driver in Preston Springs. Her Canadian postings included Jericho Beach, Vancouver, BC; Ottawa, Ontario; and Royal Rhodes in Victoria, where she served as a driver in the motor pool. Some of her duties included maintaining, servicing, and driving vehicles; including delivering signals from the admiral to ships in port. Heidi missed out on her posting overseas to England because of pneumonia and was instead posted to Washington, DC where she drove for United States Naval Officer, Admiral Reed. Heidi loved every moment of her service, and carried the memories, experiences, skills, and friendships throughout her life. She was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Port Perry Branch. Heidi passed away on January 17, 2024, just shy of her 100th birthday in Uxbridge, Ontario.
