109 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COURT, Richard Charles Richard was born in Birmingham, England on October 17, 1874. He moved to Canada in 1903. Richard enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on March 15, 1915 and served in the 47th Regiment in Lindsay then joined the 38th Battalion. He embarked from Montreal on August 1, 1915 aboard “Caledonian”; disembarked in Bermuda on August 12, 1915; embarked in Bermuda on May 30, 1916 aboard “Grampian”. He arrived in England on June 9, 1916 and transferred to the 51st Battalion on July 6, 1916. He was declared unfit for service because of his age and left for Canada on SS “Missanabie” on February 2, 1917. He was officially discharged from service on August 15, 1917. In Lindsay, he worked in the office of the bank of Montreal. Richard passed away on December 29,1930. He left a wife and five daughters. CRAFT, Chester Chester was born in Peterborough, Ontario on May 21, 1897. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) onAugust 16, 1915 and served with 20th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment). Private Craft was killed in action on March 5, 1917 in St. Eloi, France. He is buried in the Ecoivre Military Cemetery in Mount St. Eloi, Pas-de-Calais, France. COUTTS, Andrew Donald Andrew was born on October 24, 1898, in McKillop Township, Huron County, to Robert and Mary Coutts. He enlisted in Brussels with the 161st Huron Battalion CEF on May 16, 1916. He sailed to England on the SS Laplandin November 1916. He was taken on strength with the 4th Canadian Res. Bn. but before seeing action, he contracted measles and then the mumps. He returned to duty with the 47th Bn. and saw action in France. Andrew was injured in February 1919 and returned to England. He returned to Canada on demobilization and was discharged on June 6, 1919. He came home and settled on a farm near Walton and married Mary Smith in 1924 and had one daughter. He was a postal carrier for forty years and they lived inWalton for sixty years. The family travelled to the west on July 4, 1966 to attend a family reunion and a tragic car accident claimed the lives of the three of them outside of Winnipeg. They are buried in Brussels Cemetery. Andrew Coutts was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion.
