101 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CLARK, Richard R. J. C. Richard was born on December 6, 1915 in Manitoulin Island, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942. Richard was killed in action in 1944 in France. CLEARY, Francis Peter Francis was born on May 31, 1913, in Seaforth, Ontario, to Peter and Mary (Anderson) Cleary. His public school education was received in Seaforth. Francis enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in World War II on July 17, 1942. After his training, he was sent to England and transferred to 31st (Alberta) Reconnaissance Regiment (C.A.A.). He was part of Operation Goldflake “the mass movement of troops from Italy to Belgium/Germany” in early 1944. He then joined the 4th Recce Regiment operating a flame thrower vehicle throughout the remainder of the war. He personally experienced the end of war celebrations. Corporal Francis Cleary was discharged on January 28, 1946. He married Anne May and they raised five children. He was employed at Hahn Brass as foreman of the drill press department. Francis was a Charter, Life, and Past President of The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532. He significantly helped his comrades obtain Government Benefits/Pensions. Anne also served as President with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Branch. He was very involved in woodworking, repairing cars, acting in church plays, and volunteering with the fire department. Francis passed away on May 19, 1967 and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery, N.H. CLARK, Robert W. “Bill” Bill was born in Inverness, Scotland in 1921. He joined the Merchant Navy in 1945 at the age of 16 and was assigned to the M.V. Lucerna which had previously been torpedoed by a U-boat on the Murmansk run. The Lucerna took supplies and relief crews to the whaling and radar stations in Antarctica during the war. Bill recounted how the Norwegian crew, who they relieved from the whaling station, had gone berserk from brewing their own alcohol. He was in Cuxhaven in the North Sea bringing fuel for the captured German battle ship, Prinz Eugen, at the time of the surrender of the German Forces. Bill passed away in April 2014.
