99 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CHRISTIE, Robert Samuel Leslie Robert was born on July 24, 1922, in Desboro, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 30, 1942 and served with No. 166 Squadron overseas during World War II. At the end of the war, they made several trips to drop food for the Dutch people as well as missions to bring prisoners of war home. Following his discharge on October 10, 1945, he worked as a bookkeeper at the Ford Garage for about 25 years after which he ran a farm until his retirement in 1980. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defense Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. A Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Chesley Branch 14 for 52 years, he also served as Secretary Treasurer. Robert passed away on March 2, 1998. CLANCY, Jack Jack was born on January 11, 1913. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and served with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Simcoe Branch 79. Jack passed away on July 4, 1989. CHURCH, Oscar Wilde Oscar was born on July 15, 1884 in Woodstock, Ontario to Norman and Jennie (Burbanks) Church. He received his draft letter to report in Hamilton, Ontario where he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 5, 1918 with the 2nd Canadian Ontario Regiment, 1st Depot Battalion. During his training, he had a stay at the Queen St. Military Hospital in Hamilton (measles) and also a problem with his eyes which resulted in glasses. He was sent out of Halifax on September 29, 1918 arriving in England on March 4, 1918 and transferred to the 116th Battalion. He crossed the channel into France on August 20, 1918, posted with the 110th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force and to the front lines on August 27, 1918. Oscar died on the battlefield on September 29, 1918 and is buried in the St. Olle British Cemetery, Nord, France. Private Oscar Church is commemorated on page 384 of the First World War Book of Remembrance in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill, Ottawa.
