377 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND VANDENBERGHE, Nathienal Garry Garry was born in Saint John, NB, on October 5, 1947. He enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) on November 5, 1965. He served in all three branches as a cook and sailed on ships HMCS Annapolis, HMCS Port St. Louis, HMCS Margaree, HMCS Assiniboine, posted to CFB Shilo for one year then to CFB Borden as an instructor at the cook’s school. He was then posted to CFB Gagetown followed by CFB Petawawa serving with 2 Service Battalion, 2 Combat Engineers and 427 Squadron and did a UNIIMOG attachment to Bagdad/Basra. He was posted to Borden to the cook’s school in 1992, retiring in 1996. He went to work with Commissionaires in CFB Borden for six years then returned as a civilian cook and retired again in 2015. Although retired, Garry continued to serve the veterans in The Royal Canadian Legion as 2nd Vice, Cadet Liaison and as Veterans Service Officer (VSO). Garry has been involved as an instructor for archery classes and very involved working with Scout Troops with disabilities. His medals are for Special Service to NATO, Canadian Peacekeeping Service, UNIIMOG, and CD. He is an eleven-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Angus Branch 499. VENUS, Carolyn G. Carolyn was born in Brantford, Ontario on March 12, 1942. She joined the Air Force in Toronto, at the age of eighteen. Her basic training was in St. Jean, Quebec. She was with the 408 Squadron. She worked as an administrative clerk and was also a bartender in an NCO mess for one year. Carolyn also spent time in Aylmer, Borden, and Ottawa. In 1961, she got married. She was still in her uniform. After she was released, she went to Gander, Newfoundland to be with her husband. Together, they raised three children. For two years, she worked for Pan American Airlines, and then she worked for the government. Carolyn also worked as a high school teacher in Mississauga, Ontario. She is now retired and is a four-year proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 261 in Tecumseh, Ontario. VARESE, Marco Varese was born in Montreal, Quebec on February 14, 1957. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in April 1979. He served with Royal Canadian Regiment, Airborne Regiment until his release on July 12, 1999. Post Military, Marco did mapping and charting in Ottawa from 2000 to 2017. He is a four-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Battlefield Branch 622 in Stoney Creek.
