375 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TURKOSZ, John Leo John was born in Alberta on April 14, 1924. He served overseas in the Army (Regular Force) with the Lorne Scots and was wounded in action. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197. John passed away on November 20, 1995. TWEEDLE, Charles Milton Charles was born on March 13, 1917, in Richards Landing, a small community on St. Joseph Island east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, to George and Esther Tweedle. His trade is listed as a teacher. He served in the Soo and Sudbury Regiment. On July 9, 1941, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as a pilot officer. Charles was killed in action on July 10, 1943, when his plane was shot down over Syracuse, Sicily while his Wellington bomber was flying an illumination mission. His name is inscribed on the Malta Memorial and the Richards Landing cenotaph. TURKOSZ, Peter Peter was born inAlberta on December 11, 1925. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on April 14, 1942, and served with the 1st Battalion NewWestminster (MG) in Italy, Holland and England. He was released on February 22, 1944. Every November 11, Peter was haunted by the loss of so many young men. He never talked of war; he felt a survivor’s guilt. Once in Italy’s olive groves, his commanding officer sent him to tell the men to put out their cigarettes, when he approached the square helmet lit up from the cigarette. Peter took them prisoner. They lay in wait with machine guns in hay bales. He had saved many lives. Once home from war, Peter was one of the best carpenters Acton ever had. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197 for 68 years. Peter passed away on May 5, 2010.
