371 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND THUELL, Joseph Clarence Joseph was born on March 6, 1898, in Morris Township. He was from a family of nine and was one of three brothers to serve inWorldWar I. He was a teamster prior to his enlistment in the Army (Regular Force) on January 11, 1916, in Brussels with the 161st Huron Battalion COMF. He departed from Canada on the SS Lapland in November 1916 and served in England and in France. In April 1918, at Arras, France, Private Joseph Thuell suffered a gunshot wound to his arm and face. He was hospitalized and received treatment in 5 Military Hospitals before being sent home in October 1918. His right arm was crippled. He received the Good Conduct Badge in January 1918. He was medically discharged on April 4, 1919. On his return, he trained to be an electrician, even with his disability. He worked as an electrician until his semi-retirement and then his sudden passing on January 9, 1970. He rests in Brussels Cemetery. Joseph was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218. TILLEY, Jim Arthur Jim was born in Hamilton, Ontario on July 2, 1916. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and served in England, Holland and France during World War II. He was a resident of Bala, Ontario on September 19, 1959, and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Bala Branch 424 for forty years. Jim passed away on September 20, 1999. THUELL, Percy Reid Percy was born in Blyth, Ontario on January 12, 1895. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 1, 1916, with the 161st Huron Battalion in Brussels. During training at Camp Borden, he became ill and had surgery that resulted in him being placed on administrative duty and then discharged on September 30, 1916. He re-enlisted on April 13, 1917, in Hamilton joining the 241st Overseas Battalion, part of the Canadian Scottish Borderers. He left Canada on the SS Olympic only two weeks after enlisting. He served in France with the Canadian Rly Sappers. He was hospitalized twice in 1918 with pleurisy and was discharged on December 31, 1918. He became an engineer in Goderich and Stratford before moving to Burlington. Sapper Percy Thuell passed away on January 24, 1970, with no immediate surviving relatives. He rests at Brussels Cemetery.
