369 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TARDIF, Horace William Horace was born on February 28, 1913, in Ingram Township, Ontario, to Horace Francis Tardif and Martha Emily Johnston. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on September 5, 1940, and served with No. 12 Coy, Canadian Forestry Corps before transferring to Canadian Provost Corps. He served in the United Kingdom and in Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged on April 1, 1946. Horace received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He returned to Canada and married Mary Lewella Johnston in Port Credit, Ontario. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Drayton Branch for ten years. Horace passed away in Harriston, Ontario on January 27, 1998. THUELL, Frederick Nelson Frederick was born in Morris Township on May 29, 1899. He was part of a family of nine and was one of three brothers to enlist. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 11, 1916, and joined 161st Battalion. Private Frederick Thuell arrived in England in November 1916 on the Lapland. He joined the 25th Reserve Battalion, then the 4th Canadian Res. Battalion and the 4th Canadian Rly Troop at which time he reached the rank of Sergeant in March 1918. He was discharged on September 22, 1919, and returned to Canada. He was a tool and diemaker in civilian life. He got his experience in Detroit and returned to Canada in 1932. He was engaged as a top executive in the plant management industry and spent his last fifteen years with the Department of Reforms Institution and worked out of Guelph. He retired to Brussels in 1966 and was awarded a Life Membership of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 in 1981. Frederick passed away on March 8, 1998, at the age of 98. THUELL, Ernest Roy Ernest was born on December 28, 1895, in Morris Township, Huron County, Ontario. He was from a family of nine. He was the first to enlist in the Army (Regular Force) with the 161st Huron Battalion C.E.F. in Brussels on December 10, 1915, followed by his two brothers in January 1916. He was a farm labourer prior to enlistment. He sailed to England on the SS Laplandin November and was deployed to France in December 1916. He was hospitalized for several maladies including bronchitis, influenza, and scabies during his first year. In October 1917, he was wounded in the battle at Passchendaele. He suffered a gunshot wound in the chest and spine. He was 24 years old. Ernest spent another year at the Dominion Military Orthopedic Hospital in Whitby and at the Convalescent Home. He could use crutches but spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. He received the Gold Stripe 1 and was discharged on April 29, 1919. He was a Charter Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 when formed in October 1931 and was a forty-year member. Ernest passed away on June 25, 1972.
