359 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STRUTHERS, Ross Edwin Ross was born in Flamborough, Ontario on January 31, 1920, toWilliam and Edith (Hamilton) Struthers. He had nine siblings: Robert, Stanley, Lorne, Shirley, David, Harold, Charles, Ruth, and Donald. He attended school in Preston and enrolled in the Galt Aircraft School in 1940. In February 1941, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular) as an engine mechanic at Camp Borden, graduated from wireless school in Guelph, received his wings at Jarvis, spent four months at Crumlin Airport in London and was stationed for a long time in Quebec. Sergeant Ross Struthers was discharged in 1945. Ross married Irma (Chowen) and they raised five children: Rae, Stephen, Dan, Neil, and Keith. He was employed as an electronic technician at Canadian General Tower and retired after 28 years. He was one of four brothers who served in World War II. Ross passed away on May 21, 2003, and is buried in the Blair Cemetery in Cambridge, Ontario. STUART, William McBride William was born in Glencoe, Ontario on November 17, 1906. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in 1928, most likely in London with the Royal Canadian Dragoons. At this time, this branch of the army used horses and wagon style gun carriages. With the advancement of mechanization, the horses retired as late as 1942 and William was trained to be a fitter (today’s all-around mechanic) working with the new machinery along with the artillery. He was shipped to Scotland in 1942 and trained for the invasion of Italy. After Italy, he was sent to France then to the Netherlands where his unit was part of the liberation of The Netherlands before advancing into Germany. He was never injured but did suffer hearing loss from artillery fire. At the end of the war, he was stationed at Camp Borden. William built a house for his family and retired from the army in 1949 after twenty years of service. Subsequently, he was employed by a local building contractor, and later worked as a Commissionaire at Camp Borden. William with wife and daughter resided in Barrie. William passed away November 5, 1966. STRUTHERS, Stanley Hamilton Stanley was born in Preston, Ontario on August 25, 1923, to William and Edith (Hamilton) Struthers. He had nine siblings: Ross, Robert, Lorne, Shirlie, David, Harold, Charles, Ruth, and Donald. Stan joined the Army (Regular Force) in February 1944 with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and served in Canada, England and France during World War II. The 21-year-old became a stretcher bearer and entered into his thirtieth battle. In the battle in Xanten, he was tending to a wounded soldier when a bullet struck his left arm. He continued his duty to his injured comrades and a week later gangrene had set in and his left arm was amputated. He served with the Canadian War Amps Charity for 34 years. Stan married Elizabeth Elaine (Pearson) and they raised five children: Ronald, Gail, Shirlie, Glen, and Linda. After the war, he took up farming for fifty years. Stan was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Preston Branch 126 up until his death at his home on September 20, 2011. He is buried in Parklawn Cemetery in Cambridge, Ontario.
