357 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STROUD, Frederick Amos Frederick was born on February 13, 1899, in Eden, Mariposa Township, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Lindsay on March 20, 1916, with the 109th Canadian Expeditionary Force, 38th Battalion. He served his country with honour in the Signals Special Duty Section in Canada, England and France from 1916 to 1918 during World War I. He was disabled in France and was honourably discharged on July 9, 1918. Upon his return home and following rehabilitation, he attended Queen’s University where he studied business administration. In 1924, he married and together with his wife Doris raised a family of ten children in Lindsay where he became actively involved in his community through participation in various local organizations as well as being a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Lindsay Branch 67. He began caretaking duties at both South Ward and Central Public Schools in the 1930’s and later became well known by the staff and students as Head Custodian at Lindsay Collegiate Institute from 1940 to 1962. Upon retirement, he moved to Wilberforce, Ontario where he resided for eight years until his death on February 23, 1970. STRUTHERS, Robert Glenn Robert was born on January 1, 1922, in Preston, Ontario, to William Gilchrist and Edith Evelyn (Hamilton) Struthers. He had nine siblings: Ross, Stanley, Lorne, Shirlie, David, Harold, Charles, Ruth and Donald. Robert was working in the electrical trade when he up and joined the World War II effort in 1942 so that he could be with his three brothers. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and did his basic training with the Royal Canadian Engineers and even though he had issues with marching, the military tried to fit him in. After a medical review, Robert was discharged in 1944. He married Lorene (Mitchell) and they had six children: Donald, Carol, Brenda, Robert, Bruce and John. Robert worked for 75 years in the electrical profession and passed away on April 5, 2016, in his 95th year. He has been laid to rest in Parklawn Cemetery in Cambridge, Ontario. STRUTHERS, Lorne Allan Lorne was born in Galt, Ontario on March 19, 1925, toWilliam Gilchrist and Edith Evelyn (Hamilton) Struthers. He had nine siblings: Ross, Robert, Stanley, Shirlie, Harold, Charles, Ruth, David and Donald. Lorne attended school in Preston and worked as an electrician. In 1943, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and received his training at Barriefield Camp in Kingston. He became a dispatch rider with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps and posted in Nova Scotia. In July 1944, he was posted to various bases in England. He was discharged in June 1945. Lorne married Eva Otilia Lotspeich and they raised two sons, Larry and Allan. He owned and worked at the family business, Struthers Heating/Struthers Contracting for over fifty years. Lorne passed away at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on July 31, 2017, in his 93rd year. He has been laid to rest in Parklawn Cemetery in Cambridge, Ontario.
