353 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STEPHENS, George Alexander “Jim” Jim was born in Southend, Essex, England on November 24, 1920. He served in the Royal Navy (Regular Force) on a minesweeper at the rank of Able Seaman. Jim married Catherine Menzies Lornie and they had two sons. Cathy and Jim immigrated to Canada in 1956 and lived in Newmarket until his passing on August 18, 1995. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426 for fifty years. STILES, Darren James Darren was born in Kenora, Ontario on May 15, 1978. He joined the Army Reserve in London, Ontario on June 26, 1995, as soon as he turned seventeen years old. He eventually made the military his career and served with the 1 Service Battalion in Edmonton, Alberta and 2 Service Battalion in Petawawa, Ontario. During his 23 years in the military, Darren served in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. He was released on November 20, 2018. Unfortunately, Darren passed away on June 26, 2020. He is sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his parents, his sister Dawn, his two sons Jevyn and Nathan and his many other relatives, friends and comrades. Darren was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Strathroy Branch 436 for nine years and resided in Deep River, Ontario for two years. STEWART, Andrew Albert “Andy” Andy was born in Viking, Alberta on May 7, 1931. He was the seventh of twelve children of William and Louise. Enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1957, he took his basic training at St. Hubert, Quebec and was posted to a top secret RCAF station near Clinton, Ontario that was used for training radar technicians and wireless telegraphy operators. Once training was completed, he transferred to Gimli, Manitoba as a telegraphy operator in the control tower. Gimli was being used as a training centre for T-33 Thunderbird sub-sonic jets by Canada, Turkey, Germany and the UK. After his discharge on August 15, 1960, Andy returned to his pre-service career in broadcasting. He was a radio and television broadcaster, eventually receiving a 50-year certificate from the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. In 2016, while residents of Flin Flon, Manitoba, his wife Isabel passed away after 54 years of marriage. In 2017, Andy moved to Richmond Hill. He was awarded a Life Membership of The Royal Canadian Legion and has over 58 years of service and is currently serving as the Service Officer at Branch 375 Richmond Hill. He continues to ‘dabble remotely’ in broadcasting with a weekly radio show “Meet The Legion” on Flin Flon’s CFAR.
