351 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SOIKIE, Anthony Joseph “Tony” Tony was born in Barry’s Bay Ontario on March 19, 1942. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on August 9, 1960, and served with the Canadian Guards in Canada, Germany, and Cyprus. He was released on October 16, 1966. Following his release from the military, Tony married in 1967 and had two children, Patrick and Glen. He worked for J.M. Schneider Meats for thirty years in Kitchener, Ontario until his retirement in 1997. Tony is a 26-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Madoc Branch 363. He has been a resident of Tweed, Ontario since August 9, 1997. STEPHENS, Catherine Menzies “Cathy” Cathy was born on January 22, 1922, in Aberdeen, Scotland. She served as a WREN steward fromAugust 23, 1940, until her discharge on April 29, 1941. She met and married George Stephens, they had two sons, and immigrated to Canada in 1956. They lived in Newmarket until her death on August 4, 2007. She was a forty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426. STEELE, Harold John Harold was born in Hastings County, Ontario, on May 16, 1898, the son of John and Margaret Minerva (Brown) Steele. On May 28, 1918, Harold enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was twenty years old and single. He listed his trade as “track man” and had no previous military experience. Private Steele was reassigned to the 259th Battalion Canadian Rifles (Siberia). The battalion was one of the two Canadian Infantry battalions sent to Siberia and northern Russia as a component of the 16th Canadian Brigade Group whose mandate was to protect lines of communication during the Russian Revolution. Harold sailed with his unit to Siberia on the SSProtesilaus arriving in Vladivostock on January 19, 1919. He returned to Canada May 19, 1919, to be demobilized on June 12 of that year. He settled in Osseo, Northern Ontario with his wife Josephine (Libby) and raised five daughters. He worked for the Ontario Northland Railway (ONR) until retiring in 1962 as General Road Master in North Bay, Ontario. Harold passed away on October 7, 1970, at the age of 72. He is buried in North Bay.
