347 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, John Weakford “Jack” Jack was born in Honey Harbour, Ontario on April 26, 1913, the son of Franklin Fowler and Margaret Elizabeth (Weakford) Smith. Before he enlisted in the Army, Jack worked as a pipe mechanic. He married Florence Blanche Moreau, of Victoria Harbour, Ontario in March 1942 and together they had a son, Thomas. During World War II, Jack enrolled with the Canadian Army (Regular Force) in Toronto on July 18, 1942. Private Jack Smith initially joined the Royal Canadian Engineers but soon transferred to the Algonquin Regiment part of the Canadian Infantry Corps. After his basic infantry training and some home defence service in Canada, he embarked with his unit to the United Kingdom on June 11, 1943 and served with the regiment in the United Kingdom and through the advance in Normandy, France. Lance-Corporal Jack Smith was killed in action against the enemy on August 10, 1944 during the latter part of Allied operations in Normandy. He was 31 years old. Jack is buried in the Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Normandy. SMITH, Reginald Clayton Reginald was born on September 2, 1921, in Ontario, to Herbert and Vera Smith who resided in Richards Landing, a small community on St. Joseph Island east of Sault Ste. Marie. Service records indicate that he was a farmer. Some time after World War II started, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and joined the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada. On July 18, 1944, while serving in France, he was killed. Reginald is buried in the Beny-sur-Mer Canadian Cemetery in France. His name is inscribed on the Richards Landing cenotaph. SMITH, Joseph Allan Joseph was born in Victoria Harbour, Ontario on March 1, 1937. He enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) in 1956 and served as a Radio Operator in communications stationed in Canada at Borden, Centralia, Clinton and Ottawa and in Marville, France. He received the Canadian Forces Decoration with one bar. Joseph was released in 1985. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kanata Branch 638 for two years. Joseph passed away on September 13, 1989.
