345 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMART, Henry Norman Henry was born in Holt, Ontario on April 3, 1909. He served with the Queen’sYork Rangers from 1930 to 1933 as a Private. Later, he joined the RCASC Service Wing on March 5, 1942 at No. 2 District Depot (Active Service AF) in Toronto. He transferred to RCASC Borden for training and taken on strength with 66th Tank Transporter Company on April 11, 1942, and S.O.S. in Canada and at Aldershot, England on July 23-24, 1943. He was sent to France on July 1944 with General Troop Convoy and was promoted to L/Cpl in December 1944. He returned to the United Kingdom on November 26, 1945, S.O.S. with Canadian Army Overseas on December 21, 1945 and returned to Canada where he was taken on strength with Canadian Army/Tank School (S-8 CATS) in Hamilton, Ontario. His service totaled 46 months, 29 of which were overseas in the UK, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was discharged from the Army on February 12, 1946, at No. 2 District Depot in Toronto. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Henry returned to civilian life in Newmarket, Ontario. Henry passed on October 23, 1966. SMITH, James James was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 25, 1881. He served with the 2nd Royal Highlanders (BlackWatch) for two years and four months prior immigrating to Canada and eventually joining the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. He initially signed up for service in London, Ontario with the 2nd Overseas Army Service Corps, Training Division on January 12, 1917. Lance Corporal Smith served in Canada, then England from May to December 1917 and France from December 1917 until early 1919. In July 1917, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. On May 9, 1919, he was discharged from the Canadian Military Service in Toronto. James passed away on December 27, 1971. SMITH, Howard Howard was born on February 29, 1896, in Holstein, Ontario to Alpheus Smith and Mary McLaughlin. He joined the armed services on October 4, 1915, at the age of nineteen and eight months. He was listed as a private in the 13th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was deployed in France during World War I. He was the younger brother of Willard Smith. Howard was killed in action on September 4, 1916, and is listed as buried in Vimy, France.
