341 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SIMARD, Gerald W. Gerald was born in Windsor, Ontario on April 29, 1938. He joined Army (Reserve Force) on November 15, 1958, at the age of nineteen. His training was at the St. Luke’s Barracks in Windsor. Gerald served as a reservist with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME). In 1961, Sgt Simard was called up to active Army duty from the Wolseley Barracks in London as a recruiting officer for Windsor. Gerald played baseball and hockey for the RCEME. He was released in March 1965. He went to work for Electrozade for the next thirty years. He is currently the Sgt-at-Arms and the Second Vice President at The Royal Canadian Legion Tecumseh Branch 261. He has been a member for 59 years. SIVYER (FLAHERTY), Jean Dorothea Jean was born on August 7, 1926, in Kitchener, Ontario, to James and Violet Flaherty (Winch). She had four siblings: Helen Margaret (Ernst), James Robert, Stanley Norman and Noreen (Beech). Jean received her education in Doon and Kitchener, up to and including grade 10. Jean joined the Canadian Women Army Corp in August 1943 using her older sister’s birth certificate. When she got home, she stuck the certificate back into her sister’s wallet. She received an honourable discharge in November 1945. Jean married Teddy S. Sivyer and together they raised a son, Teddy W., and a daughter, Pamela Jean (Hallman). She was very involved with many organizations, a Cub Leader, Girl Guide Leader, and Sunday School Teacher. Jean and three other local CWAC veterans were very instrumental in erecting a statue commemorating women’s service to World War II at the East Ave. Barracks in Kitchener, Ontario. In 1971, Jean joined The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 and was awarded a Life Membership in both the Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary. Jean died peacefully on May 3, 2020. SIMONS, John Henry John was born on January 20, 1917, in Hilton Beach, Ontario, St. Joseph Island east of Sault Ste. Marie, to Alice and Alfred Simons. His trade was a miner. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on October 10, 1941, and was in the Sault and Sudbury Regiment and then the Perth Regiment. On February 5, 1944, he was killed in action in the Battle of Ortona in Italy. John is buried in the Moro River Cemetery in Ortona. His name is inscribed on the Hilton Beach cenotaph.
