339 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SHANTZ, Cameron Gillies “Cam” Cam was born on June 14, 1922, on a farm in Plattsville, Ontario. He had three siblings: Harry, Nile and Jewel. He married Marjorie Mildred (Brown), and they raised two daughters, Judith Ann and Jane Agnes. On December 3, 1942, Cam enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) and was aboard the HMCS Star in Hamilton. Eighteen months of training prepared Cam and friend Gordon for duty aboard the Kootenay from Shelburne, Nova Scotia to convoy duty to and from the British Isles also chasing subs in the English Channel. Cam was discharged on October 5, 1945. After the war, he worked for twelve years for a precision sheet metal business, then accepted the position of postmaster in Plattsville. Cam was very involved with horses, buying, raising, training and showing Percheron horses. He was President of the Plattsville horse show for 35 years and became President of the School Board. As a gift to Plattsville, he commissioned five plaques as permanent memorials commemorating the 200-plus years of Plattsville. He was a forty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch. Cam passed away on August 28, 2005, and is laid to rest in the Union Cemetery, New Dundee. SILVIUS, Raymond Lee “Ray” Ray was born on August 8, 1933, in Windsor, Ontario. With his father’s permission, Ray joined the Army at the age of seventeen on June 5, 1951 in London, Ontario. He stayed at Wolseley Barracks before going for training in Wainwright, Alberta. In 1952, Ray was sent to South Korea and served for thirteen months. On October 3, Ray came back to Canada as a Lance Corporal. It took the ship sixteen days to get to Vancouver. After a two-month leave, Ray went back to London where he was discharged in May 1954 as a full Corporal. In 1955, he got married and raised two children. He worked in the parts department at a car dealership until he retired in 1988. Ray is a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion Riverside Branch 255 in Windsor. SIGURDSON, Craig William Craig was born in Montreal, Quebec. Captain Craig Sigurdson, CD, enlisted in the Air Force (Reserve Force) in 1996 and served for more than 25 years as a pilot, including deployments to CFB Trenton. Serving in the Canadian Forces was the fulfillment of a childhood dream. Craig loved every second that he spent flying at the Centralia and Chatham airports and is grateful for the many lifelong friends he made. He is a two-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Vimy Branch 145.
