331 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RUTTAN, Joseph Brant Joseph was born in Adolphustown in 1784. He was named after Joseph Brant, the famous Mohawk Chief who served honourably on the British side during the American Revolution, and with whom Captain Peter Ruttan (father) had made a tour of observation from New York to Western Canada. Joseph served in Canada and in the United States as a private in Captain Thomas Dorland’s Flank Company, Colonel Wainwright’s 1st Regiment Lennox Militia during the War of 1812. He married Alley Canniff and they had twelve children together. Joseph passed away on January 12, 1832. RUTTAN, William William was born on April 2, 1759, in Schraalenburgh, NJ. He was married on June 10, 1782, in NewYork, to Margaret Steel. William was commissioned Lieutenant, Associated Loyalists, and he and Margaret accompanied his brother Captain Peter Rutan on board the ship Hope from New York to Quebec where they arrived on August 14, 1783. The party continued on to Sorel, arriving there in September. William drew Lot 18, Concession 1, in Adolphustown Township, for which he received a Crown Deed dated February 22, 1805. He and Margaret resided there during their remaining years. William and his brother Peter were very active in community affairs, and both contributed to the building of the Hay Bay Church in 1792. William died on October 9 and was interred on October 11, 1843, in St. Paul’s churchyard. A lengthy sermon was preached by the Reverend Deacon who said in closing “His life was Holy - his end was Peace.” Margaret died on February 1, 1843, and was interred beside William on February 5, 1844, the Reverend Deacon conducting the service. They had nine children: one child born and died, Peter William, Daniel, Henry, Abraham, Elizabeth, Matthew, Jacob, and Charles Stuart. RUTTAN, William William was born in Schraalenburgh, NJ on September 2, 1781, and moved to Adolphustown in 1784. He was married on February 15, 1808, to Rebecca Angel (Ellis), a widow. They had two sons: Jacob, born in 1808 and John, born in 1810. He was a private in the Glengarry Light Infantry and died in the service of his country in 1813 during the War of 1812.
