327 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ROWLAND, Clifford Edward Clifford was born on April 3, 1898, in Alma, Ontario and lived in St. Catharines for a short time before he moved with his family to Grey Township and the community of Ethel where he farmed. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Brussels with the 161st OS Battalion C.E.F. He sailed to England on November 11, 1916, on the Lapland and served in Belgium and France as a Machine Gun Operator. He suffered injuries several times including being burned and losing a middle finger in action. He returned home in March 1919, was discharged on April 12, 1919, and continued farming. Clifford married Marion and they had two children. Clifford was interested in local politics and was on Grey Township Council for six years before becoming Reeve from 1952 to 1957. He resided in Ethel, Ontario for sixty years. Clifford passed away in 1972 and rests in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Ethel. RUMLEY, James V. James was born in Tobermory, Ontario in 1922. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in London, Ontario and served during World War II. James passed away in 2003. RUDOLPH, James Keith James was born in Weston, Ontario on August 3, 1921. He enjoyed hunting, snowshoeing and all types Infantry team sports. At 16, he left school to work at the family lumber mill and at 21, joined the Perth Regiment on August 4, 1943. He was killed in action in Italy on August 31, 1944 and is laid to rest in the MontecchioWar Cemetery. For his service, he was awarded six medals for bravery and sacrifice.
